Hey anyone hear anything about MLK recently? I know fodrizzle posted on 1/10/2006 that changes were being implemented. Just curious to see if anyone's heard anything. Anyone on SDN apply or match there?

GeneralVeers posts a bunch on here. They got a new PD and I believe filled like 1/2 of their spots pre-scramble which was a good number per veers since they didnt interview many people. Ill let him elaborate.. do a search I think there was a whole thread to it..

Yeah and I would guess some of their spots were taken in the scramble too (its LA!) Veers knows this best, so we'll wait for his posts!

Im sure they filled. i told a few of my friends to be on the lookout for that place.

We only had 12 spots this year instead of 14, which has to do with the GME office, our ED numbers and other factors.

We matched 6 spots initially, which is better than last year (when we only matched 5).

The other 6 were filled in scramble within about 2 hours. Personally I'm somewhat disappointed with how they filled those spots. They were going for high board scores, so we now have a bunch of disgruntled surgery residents coming to the program (4 total). Their average board scores were in the 240s.

My preference would be to pick lower board score people who wanted to do EM.

At any rate, I posted our complete match list here:

Next year is going to be different, as one of my classmates has been appointed as "recruitment director". Basically we are going to start having interviewee dinners, and activities like normal programs have. My hope is that we'll fill most or all of our spots. By that point the hospital's situation with CMS should be resolved.

Cool, I told some folks about MLK too, and will continue probably. its LA!! I guess that can be a good thing or a bad thing haha. I agree, would probably be better to fill with folks that WANT to do EM, because if the motivation isnt' there, not sure how long people would stick with it.

GeneralVeers, how is the feel of the place in general. Comraderie amongst residents, and between residents and faculty? All good? Better yet, what are the best aspects of the program (aside from the kick a** schedule)? Thanks!

The camraderie between residents is very good, as with all small groups of people there's bound to be drama, and gossip.

Camraderie with attendings is another story. It's improved, but nowhere near what it needs to be.

The schedule does kick ass.

what's so good about your guys' schedule?

12 hour shifts, 2 days on 2 days off. Considering we work 7-8 EM rotations in our intern year alone, that's a lot of days off, relative to most programs.

How many candidates do you guys put on your rank list? Why is the program not completely filled each year? Is it becuase you didn't rank enough people?
I really want to do EM, and I love LA. What kind of USMLE score will be good enough for MLK? I really want to apply there next year! I have heard rumors that the program may close pretty soon. Is that true? If it is not, MLK is where I want to be!

Any advice for applying to MLK for 2007? I am a 3rd year med student FMG from Ross, USMLE step is 217. Is that enough to be competitive for MLK? What should I do to improve my chances for MLK? Any advice for me??

Thank you for your input!
