Any Non-Traditional Students Out There?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Dancing bananas to dispel the tension!

I've had a lot of positive feedback to being a non-trad, even though I make fun of myself quite a bit. At my Tufts interview, one of my interviewers indicated that since I have a journalism background, I could probably rig something to work with the media department and get into veterinary writing. (Does that mean they'll let me in? WHO KNOWS.) But I think it shows an increased level of commitment to be non-trad. After all, I've had time to do lots of other stuff and know what I'm suited for really is vet med.

Maybe they will appreciate my well-roundedness...I have a B.S. in Psychology but professionally do budget and financial analysis for a gov't contractor. 🙂

Caninerepro is a bit of a doo-doo head but flyhi puts up with his crap - most of the time. Not that she doesn't get a few words in edgewise. I'm certain that the "real Dr." comment was not meant to be taken as an insult towards those pursuing their degree outside of the U.S.

No worries. I am not upset. It just seems offense can be taken given I do recall there was a thread some time ago regarding this topic - DVM vs BVMS (or the comparative on this latter)....can you still be called a doctor here? there? are you treated the same and so on? So it is obviously worthy of concern enough to be addressed on a thread, right? Some might have perceived the comment as a slight or ding....those that may have issues with this I mean. But let's all move on...I am ready to. 😉

Tambotie, thanks for the backup! Yes, we tolerate CR at times. Just because he has to get a DVM in order to accomodate for his itsy-bitsy-teenie-weenieness, does not mean that a BVM&S is not the equivalent here in the US. Actually, we get a little more for our money, as we will also be admitted to the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) which would allow us to practice in the UK, if we so desire. Yes, you will be called Dr. in the US.

Come join me in Edinburgh......we will have a blast being the ole single ladies roaming the pubs of Scotland 😀

CR - maybe you should have gone to Edinburgh, that way the 'Dick Vet' title would be even more appropriate

Like it flyhi! I see and get the level of joking now. 😀 I only applied to Glasgow and not Edinburgh. 🙁 I could just be a shout away though! 😉

ACK! We shall be brutal rivals then :meanie:. I'm sure you will be traveling to Edinburgh ALL the time though, since it really is THE city of Scotland, eh?

Uhh ohhh!!!!!! 😉 Stay tuned on my status. 😉

It's great to see so many non-trads not afraid to raise their hands - high!!!!! I walked away from a 20yr career with the state to go to school and work for min wage at a vet clinic all in the pursuit of my lifelong dream. Check your fear at the door and don't be afraid to step up to any challenge. I can't count how many times I held my breath and stepped up to do something new - and BIG! It pays off. We are not here on a whim, and don't plan on going out on one either so we might as well put our big girl (or boy) panties on and do what we came here to do!!!!!

On a positive note - as one of my vets told me, "Guess you never have to worry about hearing the statement, "wow you're kinda young to be a vet - did you just graduate"":soexcited:

I'll try to remember that one the next time another student asks me "Are you the instructor/professor?" I've heard that one many times as I took all the science pre-reqs.

I too am walking away from 20+ years on the job! It certainly won't be boring!

I'm with you, Tambotie!!

I've always wanted to be a veterinarian but was never sure if I'd get there. I was not encouraged to go to college as a youngster. My mother once said, "College is a place young people go to drink and screw." Fat chance I was going to do that! :nono: My family...go figure.

I married right out of high school and worked minimum wage jobs for 10 years, everything from short order cook to housekeeper to painting construction. I did not start working on my BS until I was 27, so I'm used to being the oldest one in class! Due to my family and economic situation, I chose to apply to grad school instead of vet school when I finished my undergrad.

Now that the kids are grown and gone I'm finally free to do what I have always wanted to do. I will be starting vet school this fall at age 45. I'm glad I never totally gave up on that dream!:soexcited:

Awesome tricolorbadness!!! Well I am not married, or divorced and don't have any kids (I have a fur child....I beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback who is my one and only princess)!!! I have had several long relationship but nothing evolving into marriage (well one was close but not meant to be). Oh, well I guess that'll come in due time perhaps! Wow, you rock doing this at 45 years old. Yes, and your comment about college as a youngster...yep that is the truth really!!! 😉 Where will be attending starting fall?

I will be attending Iowa State. I literally burst into tears when I got that email on the 15th.

Also, I divorced just prior to starting my undergrad. I'm currently unattached and think this is a good thing. One less thing to worry about when school starts this fall. Believe me, my fur children are enough to deal with.

I'm really glad there are so many non-trads out there. It'll be nice to have some classmates that are not young enough to be my kids!

I am so happy for you and congrats to Iowa State! You are gonna be a great vet!!!!

Great Tambotie! I have Rhodesian Ridgebacks too! 2 boys in my house but I have been thinking about adding a 3rd for a while now.

Awesome!! I love Ridgebacks! I would have more if I could. Right now I am kind of a one dog person (but I will continue to get Ridgebacks). I also had a whippet with my ex-boyfriend but he picked her and so he got to keep her. 🙁 My Ridgeback was a rescue...she is a sweetie although quite stubborn at times as I am sure you know!!! 🙂

Thanks Tambotie!!!

Rodesians are indeed beautiful dogs! But alas, I've been cursed with an affinity for the herding breeds........

Did I see rightly in another thread that you have an interview coming up in Canada?

Yep, Ridgebacks are totally awesome. That is one reason I got involved in rescue. Been doing that since 2006 and have completely enjoyed the experience and all the dogs.🙂

I really think rescues are the way to go. Now that I have done it. There are so many sweet and loving dogs available. My dog was not socialized and no one wanted her. It took a lot of work but so worth it!!!!! I love her so!!!!!
