Any Non-trads have any luck applying late in Janurary?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wait till June and submit ASAP. You should be getting your LORs now, getting your ps ready, and planning where to apply. A good early app should net you some interviews and possibly a choice before the first deposits are due next December.

Don't waste your money to apply now, worst case is you get nothing and spend money to become a reapplicant, best case is squeaking in somewhere and not getting a choice as to where.

You're not late January, you're late February because that's when your score comes out. Depending on your schools, you might get away with it.

My caution to you is that 2-3 years from now you'll wish you'd waited so you could get into a better school, so you'd have more choices of where you live/work during residency and practice. Or maybe it'll all work out. IMHO you're squandering a decent GPA on a lame application strategy.

Best of luck to you.

Absolutely do NOT waste your time/money!!! Coming from someone who did a few ap cycles in his hey day.

Even if you successfully catch the eye of an AdCom, you will be interviewing for a spot on the matriculant wait list. And if you are like me, you won't get selected off the wait list even tho, many many years ago, it was quite normal to get into school off that wait list towards the beginning of the school start date. Which they don't necessarily tell you. And it sux so much more when you get a med school interview, only to NOT get in! 🙁

[It's ironic what you find out about med school AFTER you matriculate!!]

My advice (and this goes to anyone else in a similar situation who is reading this) is, unless you interview before December, you should basically prep for another ap cycle. Apply early!!! The very 1st day. And turn those secondaries around like your life depends on it. If you are serious about getting into med school, your life does!

Sorry. Best of luck next time.

So I just took the Jan. 25, 2014 MCAT...I know it's a reach but I would love to start for Fall 2014, I have been verified by AACOMAS and have submitted my secondaries for ~10 schools and just am waiting for the MCAT scores to come back. Have any of you had any luck applying so late?

With three kids in tow, I would love to get started soon!

Stats:
3.55 Overall
3.62 Non-Science
3.45 Science
MCAT.....

Just wanted to say that I understand the impulse. It's SO hard to wait to get started. But I do think you'll have a much more successful cycle if you follow the advice above and get everything set to submit on the first day of the new cycle.

Wait for the next cycle, save money, and maximize your chances at the best schools possible. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your advice, I've decided not to apply to anymore schools and to strengthen my application for this next cycle. My sister-in-law was the one that kept harping on me that if I don't get in this year "that is was another year of doctor's salary and retirement that [I'll] be missing."

I definitely agree with what DrMidlife said about getting into the school that would be the best fit. I didn't think of it in that way before.

Good for you. I applied in July, but retook the MCAT in Sept which delayed my application being processed until mid October. I have no doubt it kept me from more choice in where I go. I don't regret it, but I know the importance of an early application, which you will greatly benefit from in a few months.

I did this (essentially). Didn't work! Take a look at my mdapps. I included that embarrassing cycle so that people should learn.

I'm psyched for your prospects in June!! Turn that energy to starting the 2015 app now. Good luck!

samc - I'm kind of suprised by your MDApps... your stats are solid. How were your EC and clinical experience?

Congrats on Cooper!

Hey congrats on Cooper! Awesome MCAT score, I would kill for anything above a 30... I had a hard time working full-time, taking care of my wife and three kids, school every night in the evenings...I'm hoping for something in the high twenties!

I'm just curious, can you even apply to any schools this late? I thought most schools have an application deadline in December...

I second what everyone else said though, just get your application materials together and ready to go for next cycle. It sucks to wait, but you'll be better off with an early app. Good luck and I hope your MCAT score comes out how you want, sounds like you worked hard!

LOL...not at you, but at society...I have various physical disabilities...it is a miracle I got in at all. Onward!

There are a number of DO schools that have deadlines of around March I believe. Although it is most likely not in the applicant's favor to apply so late.

It is an excellent way to prey on the panic of md applicants without an acceptance. They have more than enough competitive applicants, and no reason to take those who make it appear by the timing of their application that this is a backup plan.

Just found out that I was accepted to medical school! I would definitely recommend applying early and my story is n=1, but in case anyone else was in my same situation it is possible! I have been very blessed and am so excited to finally start school in July@
