can anyone give me some info about the school. thanx alin

Why would you want someone else's reason for attending Nova? If that is your number 1 choice then you'd at least need to be able to explain why it is in your own words.

i was wondering why pick nova? i want to be prepared to answer that question at the interview. can anyone give me some info about the school that makes it stand out. thanx alin

1. Because you have loads of cash and want to attend a private school.
2. You want to pay an enormously high amount of money to live in Ft. Lauderdale.
3. You want to go to school near the beach.

I was expecting "couldn't get into UF" or "i love vapid girls from south florida" but those are great reasons as well!

like most people i want to go to the school that is close to where they live. i live 10 min. from their campus. of course it's my number one choice. i know it's a good school.

If you're 10 minutes away, go and talk to some of the students.

There's nothing wrong with saying that you want to go to a school because of its location. That's why you want to go there. I don't recommend making things up during interviews.

I know for a fact that the administration at Nova's Pharmacy School reads what people write about their school on SDN (they've approached me about some things I wrote earlier this semester), be mindful of your words. I'm also pretty sure that the faculty board will be able to see right through your "what ever gets me in" attitude during an interview. It's extremely frustrating to hear that attitude from a fellow future pharmacist.

Whoever used the word "vapid" to describe South Florida is right, but it's unfair to only target the women, it's the entire culture. The area is ruled by materialism and big corporations. Nothing independent exists, Starbucks is the only coffee shop in town, and Best Buy has put all the local music shops out. They tear down historic landscapes to build 0 lot line stucco monstrosities, and then they fill the driveway with giant BMW's and Hummers. It's no wonder why originality isn't important to a south floridian.

i do genuinely want to become a pharmacist. the only reason i'm asking questions about NOVA is because i'm having trouble finding out information about the school. the nova students i've contacted with questions have been rather unresponsive. i know that it is a great school and that it has great facilities, and that it has a high board pass %. i just wanted to find out a little more so that i sounded like i cared enough to do some research.... i don't appreciate all the negative feedback......... ohhh and people in south fla. are not as bad as you say. i'm sure that there is some truth in what you said but you can't put everyone in the same boat because of the hand full bad apples.

Yeah, same here. I'd be glad to answer any questions you have regarding Nova's program. You just have to help me out by telling me what kind of information you are looking for. 😉

How many percent of students who have a bacherlor degree before entering P1? Are the pharmacy courses hard (compared to courses at your undergraduate school)? Are the tests multiple choice or essays/short answers? What is the grading policy (A=90% or grading curve)? Thanks

1. I couldn't give you an exact percentage but if I had to take an educated guess I would say roughly 70% of my class has a bachelors degree. You could call admissions- they might have that information for you.

2. Your P1 year isn't that hard. Rumor has it that P2 and P3 years are much tougher. I've found that the material isn't significantly more difficult in pharmacy school, there is just a lot more of it to learn. What I would learn over the course of a semester in undergrad I learn for one test here, especially for classes like Anatomy & Physiology and Biochemisty. The teachers move through the material pretty fast and you are responsible for learning it yourself; the professors more or less just provide you with the material. All of my professors hold review sessions before exams and all of them are willing to help if you are struggling.

3. There are around 240 students (between the 3 campuses) so all of the exams and quizzes are multiple choice. It would take the professors months to grade one exam if there were essay-type questions!

4. Grades are on a 100% scale. So far, only 1 test has actually been curved. The test averages are usually in the low 80s so there is no reason for the professors to curve exams. After each exam, the scantrons are sent to a testing center where they are processed and evaluated for "bad" questions. If the results show that more than 50% of students missed a particular question that question will be thrown out (usually.) On average, only a couple of questions will get thrown out (sometimes none will.)

Hmmm...I'm actually not sure about the % of students who have a Bachelor's prior to the PharmD. If I go by the 5 people that sit to the left/right of me (obviously not a very accurate way to tell, but it may give you an idea)...6 out of 10 earned their BS before entering the COP.

Are the courses hard? Well...yeah...it's pharmacy school. But it's definitely "doable" if you put in the effort.

Tests are almost all multiple choice. Every now and then we'd have some fill-ins, short-answer...it really depends on the class (i.e. calculations will require you to work out some problems, and statistics (ICK) is all short-answer). But for the most part, you'll be taking multiple choice exams.

Grading policy: you actually get the # on the transcript...so at the end of the semester, it'll read 89, 76, 92, etc. You just have to make sure it's a 70 or better! 😉

Hope this helps!!!

You're an ass on several accounts. To let yourself be identified on an anonymous board such as this is insanely stupid. (Let that be a lesson for all you pre-pharms out there) Did you ever consider the fact the administration has talked to you already about your comments and now you are speaking for them? I am sure they will really appreciate someone not affiliated with Nova to be speaking out about the "Facts" of thier school. While your high and mighty talk about "what ever gets me in" attitude, at the same time you try to make yourself look like a big shot and then continue to speak for Nova about being "pretty sure" they will see through it. I am also "pretty sure" they will see right though you as well being a "leader"

Have you even been to South Florida? How in the hell can anyone call it vapid? If you want vapid, go visit Belle Glade, Clewiston, or better yet Immokalee. You can go see a golden example of vapid there. If you can not find anything going on in South Florida on any given day or weekend, you need to open your eyes. Every weekend there is something going on. As far as nothing being independent, all you have to do is go directly across the street from Nova where you will find a Coffee Shop called the Roasted Bean. Best Buy certainly did not put "local music shops" out. (assume you're talking about Peaches, perhaps the imbezzlement scandle had something to do with putting them out of business?) You will be hard pressed to find any local music shops with the advent of MP3 technology so your whole idea is ridiculous at best. As far as historical landscapes, again wtf are you talking about? There was NOTHING there before but swamp land. All one needs to do is go to the 4th floor of the Nova Southeastern Library to see that. (Nova's Growth in Pictures) If your talking about the current teardown theme of downtown Fort Lauderdale/Miami, I sure wouldn't call old abandoned warehouses and crime ridden areas "historic" by any means.

It sounds like you hate big corporate stores. I got news for you. It's not different in any other big city from Miami to Seattle. Also who cares if people drive BMW's or Hummers? If people are successful, why can they not reward themselves with a car they like? And please, don't give me this environmentalist bullshi+ about big cars. There is plenty of gas to go around and if you are successful enough to fill the gas tank, then so be it.

So what exactly is originality? South Florida is probably THE most diverse population in the country and there is no originality in that? Give me a freaking break. Who cares about the fact that SOME people in South Florida are materialistic? If they are successful, it is their RIGHT to do what they want to do with their money. If they want to buy a $399 Coach bag, then by all means do it. Sounds to me like you have clear unadulterated hate for South Florida. Why is that? An ex-lover or something lives here? Perhaps you couldn't get into Nova? Just strange that you claim to "know" so much about South Florida but yet you are so clueless.

You and I clearly differ in opinion, but I have nothing but respect for you calling me out. Yeah, I probably didn’t need to respond to that comment with such a pompous response, but sometimes I just can’t help but get indignant over the lack of character some people have. “I am going to say what ever gets me in. it doesn't have to be original” How is that comment supposed to be interpreted? Maybe I misunderstood the comment, regardless; it’s certainly not my place to offend them. I apologize if I did, and I appreciate you calling me out.

As for South Florida, I was born and raised for 18 years in Miami. IMO, I think it’s a city that glamorizes the rich and criminalizes the poor. I think it’s a city where you grow up thinking you deserve a bmw when you turn 16. I just don’t like the attitude. You’re entitled to disagree, you’re entitled to drive a hummer, and your entitled drink at starbucks. But if you want to support your local music shop (they do exist) or independent business, and live with people who care about sustainability and so forth, Miami is not the place.

I don’t speak for Nova, I speak for myself. They did read my comment, and I have no problem with them knowing how I think. Ironically, I just got my acceptance letter for nova 10 minutes before writing this comment.

P.S. Is revealing your identity that big of a deal? Perhaps people would be more responsible with their comments if they weren’t hiding behind a screen name with pictures of spices getting it on. Just a thought. 😀

Fair reply Zak. SoFla is very materialistic...but like c-ject pointed out...you're going to find that pretty much anywhere now. Congrats on your acceptance letter though! There are some really great people at this school, and sure...you'll find the typical SoFla crowd, but there's a pretty good mix too. Maybe I'll run in to you at the Roasted Bean.
