Is this a legitimate site or what? I noticed an ad for an anesthesiologist position that sounded decent, so I sent an email (the preferred contact method per the ad) indicating interest along with my CV. After a week had gone by with no response, I sent a followup email again with my CV and still haven't received a response. What gives? I don't care if based on my CV they don't think I'd fit, but I'd like to be told that - no response at all seems pretty rude. Are anesthesia groups so inundated with applicants they can afford to ignore candidates?? The ad was originally placed a few months ago but was updated recently, so they are still hiring I believe. I'm very naive about these things, should i just forget it or call them or WTF?

It's legit. But the seriousness of the ad depends on the group placing it. Some might just go fishing for great candidates and then consider hiring if a great one comes along. Others might be more motivated and really need somebody to step in soon. I'd try giving them a call if the email went unanswered, but don't lose any sleep if they don't return the call.

Friends of mine have.

I interviewed in a good place from an ad there. Didn't end up taking it for personal reasons.

Don't be discouraged. Good jobs are fewer now. Keep trying. And use the phone too

I've interviewed for jobs off of gasworks. But it's like applying to any other job. If they are not interested for any reason, you probably won't hear anything back. And depending on the location and practice, they might get a lot of applicants. It's always better to call if you have a number.

Sort of...

My job was scheduled to be posted on Gasworks a few days after I cold called my group to request an interview. "Hey, I am in the area, 2 hours away, and was wondering if I could drop by to visit your group. I sent you my CV a month ago." If it is a small department then it is just a bunch of guys trying to run a business while making money with no real HR resources. They may forget that they have a CV or two on file. Persistence is the key.

Or they are shmucks who either figured you are too savy (because of your strong CV) and you would catch on to their game too quickly or your CV was too weak for them.

There's a reason employers advertise on GasWorks, and the better jobs generally don't need to.

Appreciate the responses guys but this is the main point right here. I'm not even looking for a "better job." I'm just looking for a job. I have no aspirations for partnership or a swimming pool in my backyard. I'm not a good anesthesiologist - nor a bad one either - I'm just average and my CV reflects that. Actually most of you would probably not even consider me average since I've been unable to attain board certification, though I remain a "candidate" whatever that means. But I just want to work. The hospital where this particular (small) group is based is not particularly well-known, is not in the best location, and the payor mix likely is not great; which is why it irks me that they didn't even have the decency to reply even if its "no thanks."

Do you write this on your cover letter? Maybe that's why no call back.

No of course not. I'm just telling it like it is in the comfort of anonymity on a pubic forum. At least there's nothing on my CV that makes me look particularly bad. Besides the ad clearly says BC/BE acceptable.

I just got a job that I first saw on gas work. It's academic, which I think is a different situation as far as the legitimacy of gaswork, but still, there are some real jobs on there. Good ones.

Don't be irked. Keep applying to positions. If you just want to work, e-mail/apply to more than one post of course.

Keep working towards board certification. If you can afford it, pay for review courses.

Best of luck.

Not to be harsh, guy but a lot of hospitals AND insurance companies require board certification. No board certification, no job. Best of luck. 👍

I've interviewed and hired candidates before who have responded off our Gasworks ad in the past, and will likely continue do so in the future. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with Gaswork and I don't agree with the assertion that "...the better jobs generally don't need to" [utilize gaswork]. Groups have different needs that arise at different times, and these times do not always coincide with the availability of people graduating residency, fellowship, etc. For those people who have difficulty receiving a response, yes, sometimes we do get inundated with responses and it takes us some time to sift through all the CVs that are sent. As someone wrote earlier, small departments don't necessarily have the time or resources to respond to all applicants, so please don't take it personally. Best of luck to you.

A form letter rejection would be better than no response. Just sayin'...

I just signed a contract for a job I got through Gaswork but not the usual way. I posted my CV and had a couple groups contact me. The job I took (which is a great gig in the city I am from) was never posted but they used the site as a way to find candidates. Previously, I used the sight to look for jobs and made a few contacts. Some replied some didn't. I think it is legit and a pretty good resource.

maybe it's very i'm located but i also have not had much luck on gaswork. the popular media keeps reporting an "anesthesia provider shortage" and yet there don't seem to be many jobs available where i am; and it's been that way for at least the past 3 - 4 years.

GasWork is a legitimate site that has been around since 1996. They don't have control over what is posted on their site. Some jobs are good. Some jobs are not so good.

Got my current gig thru gaswork. The cold calling didn't work for me. Half the time, the folks I spoke to in the OR/hospital didn't even know who the anesthesia group was or have any contact information for them. Yes really. And most times never got a call back. Anyway, been here three months and besides the location, the job is good. Can't have it all. Figure I will get established for a few years, pay down some loans and then move somewhere warmer.
