I just got accepted to Ohio University and was hoping to meet a few of my classmates before matriculation this fall.

Congratulations! I'll be attending OU-COM in the Fall too. I absolutely loved the school and the state (I'm not from Ohio). One big factor for me was the CORE network of hospitals. Great training opportunities without having to travel to different states.

Most definetely the CORE will offers a great learning experience. Where are you from originally? Im from Ohio and was aware of how nice the area and the school was. What impressed me the most about the school was the early clinical contact (you get to start interacting with patients within the first week!) and the school involvement in the community. Congratulations to you on being accepted and I will see you in the fall 🙂

Hey! I've also been accepted to OUCOM! I LOVED it there and think I would be really happy there for medical school. It's my first choice right now, but I'm still waiting to hear from NSUCOM and Cincinnati. Might be a tough decision!!! These cold Ohio winters are making Ft. Lauderdale sound REAL good right now....

It was a very tough decision, but I declined my interview at NSU-COM. The mandatory attendance policy scared me away (I need to be flexible with attendance, due to my young daughter and my wife's need to work to support me while I'm in school). That's also why I'm strongly considering the PCC curriculum. Study during the day when my daughter is in school, and spend time with her in the afternoon (study again in the evening...study, study, study!).

What impressed me the most about the school was the early clinical contact (you get to start interacting with patients within the first week!)

I completely agree. It makes perfect sense that if you go to medical school, you should spend some time in a clinical setting. I don't think I could stand going to classes for two whole years without ever setting foot in a hospital or clinic. At least when classes are tough and you're losing hope, spending some time with patients will remind you of why you're doing what you're doing.

Just out of curiosity what curricular track are you guys considering? I will probably apply to the PCC, but I'm a little unsure about it right now.

I'm most likely going to attend OU-COM this fall as well! I'm still waiting to hear from a couple of schools, but this was my top choice.

I'll be applying for the PCC track too! I'm in the same boat with the kids and the working spouse. I've heard from current students that PCC is a great options for those of us non-trads with families.

Hope to see y'all in a few months!

Willow

OUCOM was my first choice and I'll be attending in the fall. PCC all the way!

Have you guys sent in your PCC apps already? Looks like the PCC is a hot curriculum, so don't wait.

I also started filling out the Eye Opener that we're required to submit for financial aid. What a depressing and shocking experience that was. I'll be holding a bake sale this weekend to raise some money for med school.

what are you talking about shinken? Are you talking about the fafsa, or something else that i haven't gotten yet?

A few days ago I received a postcard from OU-COM Financial Aid. According to it, they would like us to finish all these by March 1:

- FAFSA
- OU-COM financial aid application (a simple, one-page web-based app)
- Eye Opener (you print it out from the web and fill it out, then mail it in)
- Entrance Interview (also web-based).

Go to http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/sservices/FinancialAid/index.htm and you can start filling those out. They're not too time-consuming, but you need to concentrate a bit (the entrance interview has a quiz at the end that gets automatically e-mailed to financial aid as "proof" that you completed the interview). The FAFSA is the biggie, of course, but the rest are just to make people aware of how student loans work and how much we'll owe upon graduation.

According to my Eye Opener, if I borrow as much as I think I'm going to have to borrow, the calculator estimates I'll need a yearly salary of at least $229,000 to afford the payments. So much for internal medicine...surgery, here I come!

I'm still debating whether to go to OUCOM or Western/COMP...but just like you guys I really loved OUCOM. The curriculum seems very supportive to student learning and the CORE hospitals....TOTALLY GREAT!!!!

Come on Dr. Don you know you want to come to beautiful Athens Ohio! Who needs cali and the pacific ocean when you have ohio and the majestic ohio river  (of course its probably not as nice as the Los Angeles River) Anyway im sure you will make the right decision.

Shinken did you factor in the fact that you will be able to get the in state rate after the first year of living here? If you didn't that will account for at least $24,000 in price.

Unfortunately, yes I did factor that in.

i just did my eye opener and it said basically the same things, but here is what i think.... i will take the max in loans b/c i don't know how much i will need at the end of the year what i don't use i will send back i already have medical and my parents said they would buy most of my equipment so i should save some $ there, plus when my fiance gets a job she will be able to pay rent so i don't have to borrow it. Im hoping to stay in the $120,000 total range, but in the end who cares its only money 🙄 i will ride the bus if i can and save some gas $ too. Like they say live like a student now or live like a student later. That 229,000 is is you only put 10% of your income toward loans which if you have 2 incomes coming in you should be able to afford more and it is at the standard 8.5% interest. I have been getting calls to consolidate for a guarenteed 2.0% so there is a big drop in the payment right there. It will be ok we'll make it through.
