Any OMFS programs allowing externship after D1?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd be amazed if your school allowed you to Extern that early.

But I've been wrong in the past.

I've actually tried extensively as a fresh D2 and neither my school nor schools where you can extern at wanted me. You barely know anything at all clinically so there's barely any reason for you to be there. I did however spend time at the surgery dept. at my school.
If you find out any program that accepts D1s or even D2 first semesters let me know please @GimmeTheScalpel

This is a shame. D4 students know barely anything at all regarding OMFS, to be honest. An externship should be a learning experience primarily. Programs should allow for broad exposure to the residency experience, i.e. ample OR time, night call, some clinic with an opportunity to extract a few teeth, a patient to round on during the week (with prior instruction into what is expected in this task), and teaching of basic surgical skills.

Even D4 students with multiple previous externships can't really offer anything other than help with a some basic extractions at a snails pace...which is fine! The externship should primarily be for student learning.

Any sort of evaluation of the extern should be in regards to character, attitude, eagerness to learn, and professionalism.

The paper stats will be evaluated later during the application season and compared with the applicants personal characteristics as stated above.

In my opinion, a program should be honored to have any student D1-D4 take an interest in learning more about our field and take time out of a school break to learn from us. We expect you to break the sterile field in the operating room, have to re-scrub 5 times to get it down, and perform some excellent crown extractions, leaving the root tips for us. It's all part of the learning process!

Done the first two! I'm off to a great start. 😛
