Any one from Wisconsin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The Dells during the summer is also FIB central.

Haha FIBs, one of my buddies is from Illinois and last year when I met him the first time I called him that he said it was the first time he heard it. I guess it makes sense, they usually can't hear it when it's being yelled at them from someone's car.

My dad's been cursing FIBs (out the car window) my whole life, but I didn't realize what it stood for until I was in college... hahahaha

Congrats man, although I give my sympathies having to do an EM Residency at one of two Level 1 Traumas in the state. I think you get to rotate a little on Med flight though... the attendings on Med flight are all cool as hell, I met them last summer for EMT training.

...I'm still trying to figure out how doing an EM residency at a Level I trauma center warrants sympathy...

And yes, we do rotate on Med Flight.

Oh, and we have 3 level I trauma centers. Yes, it's true. It's your little puzzle to figure out what the third is. Two of them are close to each other.

Yes, I was interested in joining Hoofers as well. They also have a sailing club which would be pretty cool if you're around Madison for the summer.

I love sailing! I don't really know how to do it myself, but my grandpa built his own catamaran and he races. He taught my mom and aunts how to sail when they were kids, too. I've wanted to learn for a long time. Too bad I won't be in the city this summer!

Oh don't get me wrong it's very cool getting a residency at a Level 1, but it's going to be stressful no doubt, that's where I was giving some sympathy. I know Madison and Milwaukee are the two cities with Level 1s, so that's what I meant. UW hospital receives trauma from a HUGE area though, the med flight docs I talked to said they were on trips before by almost Lacrosse. Anyways man best of luck to ya and congrats again on heading to UW for your residency, I would love to be there for my residency. (And hopefully I will be!

St. Joes in Marshfield handles the north part of the state, Milwaukee handles that region of the state and Madison handles the other region.

Milwaukee has a more active level 1. I'm not going to get into the details why.

The third Level 1 is actually Children's Hospital of Wisconsin's ER, which shares a door with Froedtert's ED in Milwaukee but has separate departments. They're separate institutions and are recognized as such by the American College of Surgeons.

Milwaukee has a more active ED because of those couple of guys that show up when you're on the porch minding your own business.

I gotcha! Thank you! I'm really excited. I wouldn't have it any other way. Well, I suppose it could be worse, like a receiving hospital in Detroit or Chicago...but no thanks. That's a bit more than I care to deal with.

Congrats Agent splat, I should be moving home this fall. I miss Wisconsin.

Marshfield also has a trauma center, but maybe it is Level 2.

Edit: Yep. Level 2. http://ministryhealth.org/MinistryH...ces/LocationsCallout/SaintJosephsHospital.nws

Or on your way to church.

Milwaukee's fine, but I'm so sad I have to give up my Hawaii residency and awesome driver's license now for Wisconsin.

thought this would be the appropriate thread to post in. I am from the great northwoods like SB25. I am currently holding acceptances from UW-Madison and MCW. I know there are tons of great reasons to attend either but just wanted to get the feel of the Wisconsin community. Been in madison for close to a decade so moving out to milwaukee seems really attractive right now. Also interested in Emergency Medicine. thanks. and HOW BOUT THAT GAME LAST NIGHT!!!!!! HAHAHAHAH take that FLORIDA ST!

You may want to talk to students at both places. From my knowledge, the Madison students do their rotations around the state during 3rd year. The Milwaukee students stay in Milwaukee? Obviously the patient populations will vary. I've spent some time at the MCW campus and I liked it. That's about all I can say.

Yes, for the most part at MCW we pretty much stay in Milwaukee. Occasionally a rotation might take you to Racine, Kenosha, Waukesha, or Menominee Falls. But for the most part all rotations are done at Froedtert, the VA, St. Joe's, St. Marys, and St Lukes, occasionally. Milwaukee is also a fairly car-friendly place. Parking never seemed to be an issue like I've heard about in Madison.

Parking in Milwaukee? It's ridiculous atleast over by UWM... something like 550$/semester to have an on campus parking spot. The trick with Madison is to park a little bit away from campus and walk on. I'm going to have my bike permanently locked up down town and just park off campus and ride my bike on. The downside to Madison is how spread out it is, in Milwaukee you will find thing a lot closer together.

My bad, I'm just talking about dealing with parking in regards to anything required for med school...never had an issue there. That being said I spent about 100 bucks parking downtown during my month at the medical examiner's office in January.

And while I'm gonna do residency in Madison, I'm definitely not living IN Madison...just a bit north of, most likely.

Yeah once you get off campus on UW your options go up a lot and the quality of housing is much better, cheaper too. I live in Fitchburg, or my parents do. If I stand on my roof I can see the capitol, and I'm only 15 minutes away from downtown, but it doesn't seem like you're in Madison at all.
