Surely there are some others on here.

It was opening day of rifle season here in MS.... gotta admit my feet hurt and I didnt get anything...It sure was BEAUTIFUL weather here and it was really nice to roam the woods. Saw TONS of does but the public land I was at doesnt allow doe kills. Maybe on my next day off...

I bought a muzzleloader a few weeks back. I need to get it sighted in as the public lands do allow does kills with primitive weapons...and it makes the season longer.

Took care of three hunters in our ED today, 2 falls from tree stands with C-spine injuries and one MI. All Etoh > 0.1

I look at it as sort of a Darwinian thing. Just like motorcycles and bull riding.

hunter here in MS as well, but didnt see a thing. Im off all this coming week now though, so maybe then.

good luck hunting, just dont shoot each other 🙂

I've taken care of 3 guys the past 2 weeks who had chest pain while hauling elk back to their trucks and presented w/ NSTEMIs. Just be careful, the elk are out to get you. Stick with deer...they're lighter.

On ortho this month, covering spine tonight...of course opening day and plenty (3) "c/o fall from tree stand." Gotta love it. What happens, are they too drunk? Do they get bored and fall asleep?

When I was a student on Ortho, the intern with whom I was rotating fell out of his tree stand during deer season. Apparently he leaned to take a shot, and the recoil of his slug gun knocked him off balance. No safety harness. After his vomiting and confusion resolved, and he was back at work, there was no small amount of laughing at him. 🙂

Headed out to West Texas for a white tail trip after a long string of shifts at Christmas.

I'm a southwest Texas kind of deer hunter. I like stalking, hate stands and don't trust other hunters enough to hunt within 1,000 acres of 'em.

Guns + EtOH = scarry combination that I want nothing to do with.

Freezer's about ready for another trip, though.

Take care,
Jeff

In today's news: TOWN OF SAXEVILLE, Wis. — A grandfather fatally shot his 18-year-old grandson in northwestern Waushara County during the opening weekend of Wisconsin's nine-day gun deer-hunting season, a warden says.

He was shot in the upper thigh and inner groin. He died later in the hospital.

I thought it was de rigeuer for hunters to wear bright orange to keep this sort of thing from happening.

I think Rapid City (South Dakota) is pretty much a hunter's paradise. I don't think I've driven home without seeing at least 5 deer and 10 turkeys (seriously). I haven't seen many hunters pass through the ED, but my wife's a PT and can't get them to stay out of the tree stands (mostly sprained ankles from falling out of them). I think you could be a pretty successful hunter here with a decent-sized rock.

Side note: anyone else noticed the "special edition" camo-colored Busch Light 12-packs? Great message. Don't drink and shoot!

With the prevelence of Chronic Wasting Disease around here - there is no way I would ever eat venison. A lot of the hunters in these parts are not even processing the deer they killed. They are "donating" the deer to the local food pantry for the poor.

Fortunately, AFAIK, we don't have much prion problems where I hunt.

As for the pleasure of killing, call me old fashioned, but I learned some pretty simple rules as a kid growing up in rural east Texas:

1) Treat all guns like they're real and like they're loaded
2) Only point a gun at something you're gonna kill (people and targets most certainly included)
3) Only kill something you're gonna eat (people and targets excluded this time).

I shot one squirrel in my life, when I was about 9. After my dad made me eat him and I realized they taste like crap, I vowed never to shoot another.

When my freezer is full, I hunt with my camera (usually just as much fun).

Take care,
Jeff

Mr Orthonut got the biggest buck of the weekend (our rifle season was a few weekends ago) His first time hunting and he got the first buck, which was also the biggest one-I'm so proud of him!

I didn't get to hunt but I did get to sight in the new rifle 🙂

Here he is 🙂 My freezer is full and it couldn't have come at a better time for us financially (it's a huge help to not have to buy meat)

Nice! Looks like a Mulie?
Yep, I never realized how big their ears really were until I got to see bucky up close! Having some deer steak for dinner tonight yum.

What kind of pleasure do you get from killing?

I dont know if any of you guys like to duck hunt, but the season opens here in tennessee on saturday. Im just like a kid who is waiting for christmas morning.

Hunting is arguably a lot more ethical than buying meat at the grocery store, wearing leather shoes, or buying any other commercial animal products. Wild game is a lot healthier for you too, far less cholesterol and carbohydrates than farm raised meat.

My comment was not in reference to that, though you make valid points that I've not really considered. I didn't want to discuss the ethics of hunting but was just taken by surprise by what I quoted

I can't imagine someone receiving pleasure from the act of killing that is mentally well.

EDIT: 👍 Akira Kurosawa

Sarcasm.... I never understood stalking and killing a living thing ( much less enjoying it) unless it were a threat to me or mine

I'm usually pretty good at identifying e-sarcasm but you certainly hid it well! In any case I'm glad you were joking because I found that sentiment particularly disturbing.

It was the "let them eat PRIONS" that did it for me

That part was obviously facetious reference to feeding the poor but the following statement followed logically that you wouldn't want to hunt for food due to this danger 🙂

Hunter here in MS as well. I'm still trying to find the time to get out to the woods. My dad just bought 2 muzzleloaders (one for me, thanks dad) and I can't wait to try it out.

One with a nasty cut, he told me he cut himself but I dont know. The other with gonorrhea I didn't ask for an explanation on this one....
