After not matching last year, I've tried again this year as an independent applicant and have been to or have been invited to 8 interviews.

I'm applying from a Family Medicine intern year at Duke.

Anybody else trying again this year after scrambling last year? I presume that I have the same chance, all things being equal, as a typical senior of matching because if a program wasn't interested in idependent applicants they wouldn't have invited me to an interview.

Right?

I think I'm going back to structural engineering if I don't match this time. I really cannot take another year of family medicine although to be honest our intern year is more inpatient medcine, pediatrics, and surgery than anything else.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I can't really help you, will be starting med school myself this fall....but I'm curious, aren't you worried about debt if you go back to your old job? What made you dislike family med so bad you'd rather not be a doctor than go into family practice? I'm just curious as a engineer turned soon-to-be-med-student as well.....

The funny thing is that I after a year or two to get re-established in the engineering profession I can probably make on the high end what an FP makes on the low end.

I didn't say I was definitely going to make the switch, just thinking about it. I would take a bath financially. I really do not like FP and made a big mistake scrambling into it here at Duke instead of doing a preliminary medcine year.

But I'm optimistic. Still, I am 41 so I think that this is my last shot at EM.

Do a search for "A. Melanoleuca" on the FP forum. That guy nails it.

I interviewed with some other retreads though I am not one. Good luck man. I dont think this yr is particularly competitive so hopefully things will work out for you. Have you tried looking at the SAEM.org web site and see ifany of the 2-4's need someone. Then you could possibly count your family intern yr.

If you REALLY want it you should def apply to the newer programs like the Vegas, UF-Gainesville program and to MLK in LA which seems to be changing for the better.

Sorry I couldnt really help you but perhaps this is a little something extra for you to think about.
