So I just came back from a group meeting with a bunch of other pre-med students and I noticed how.... different I am from what seems like the majority.

Is it going to be a road block that I am not your type A med student or have B's gone through it all fine?

I'm in the same boat. So many premeds I know are cut-throat and obsessive over their grades without regard to what they actually learn. Grades are important, to be sure, but so is learning and taking intellectually stimulating advanced material.

we are 100% on the same page hahahah

You gotta meet more premeds, plenty of chill ones in my experience.

A minority, I'd say, but not quite unicorn status

I prefer them.
Of course! It's the foundation of the Cali personality

That's actually a Hawaiin hand sign. One of the things I picked up living there and brought back to CONUS haha.

I'm definitely not type A. I am super competitive, but I'm not cutthroat about it, and I mostly compete with myself. I use other people when I'm doing training or PT or academics or whatever as motivation to be the best I can, but I also try to support everyone else if I'm in a position to.

What's this "Cali" business?
Is that Catalina in the background?
I'd have said SoCal but wanted to be more inclusive. I actually couldn't tell you, never been!

Huh, TIL. It belongs to surf culture the world over now !

I suspect this varies by school. I also suspect that there are varying levels of "Type A" personality, and there is an enormous subjective component on the part of the person reporting it.

The worst is when other premeds are so snooty and full of themselves, thinking they are more accomplished because they organize their notes by color and are anal retentive about everything... I can still see their confident smiles.

But the BEST was watching it slip from their face when they snootily asked me about how I did in school, and I did better than them.
WHAT HOW CAN THAT HAPPEN THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE YOU DID NOT CATEGORIZE YOUR NOTECARDS AS WELL AS ME

I mostly just feel sorry for those people.

I do not, because they are so confident and so pleased with themselves.

Why tf have we told type a kids FOR SO LONG they will make fabulous doctors and engineers etc professionals? Lazy doesnt = type B, contrary to popular type A belief.

I feel bad for them because it must suck to always be so stressed and overbearing about something so benign as flash cards or your grades relative to a random classmate.

I honestly feel I am about as type B as it gets, and I matriculated in August.

@eteshoe, I have struggled for YEARS to know if I want to apply MD/PhD! I still don't know....sigh.
We should talk some time 😉

struggle is real, gets realer every day even if you love science. "Trade your youth for data" seems like a bad deal, but also science is awesome and fun and good for society. On the other hand, people say "when r u going to get a job?" and then I remember, "wait, why would I want a job"

The personality distribution between the premed population and the med student population are very different. Essentially, the majority of the premeds you are around won't get into medical school. Believe it or not, some schools try to select for cool, relaxed people who do things outside of premed.

One of the girls in my pre-med group would always try to make sure she had at least 20 more notecards than me on any given subject. She'd always smugly ask me if I wanted to borrow them to study, and hassle me about my policy of never pulling an all-nighter to study ( I can get my work done in time with proper planning AND get a full nights sleep. Blasphemy to pre-med culture right?) It was always so satisfying seeing her face when I would get better scores than her on all our organic chemistry and biology tests.

Sounds like you're the annoying one tbh

My advisor recommended this on behalf of Lucifer I believe. I love reading primary literature and review papers, but know I want to be a clinician first and foremost.

So I'm annoying for thinking someone who enjoys watching others fail is annoying? Ok. I'm glad I don't live in your world.

The point wasn't that she was failing (which he never said she was--just that he did better), but that she was very smug and obviously trying to make him feel inferior with her superior studying habits. Doing better than her was rewarding because it showed her that she wasn't the top **** that she so readily reminded him she (thought) she was.

The fact that you didn't see that and just saw him as the annoying one makes it seem like you're the type that guns and looks down on people with different study habits.

Look, I know all about douche bags. I am one. Douche bags don't offer their study materials to other people. They just don't.

I feel like it's very likely that the above poster just misinterpreted this girl's intentions. To me, she seems like someone who is just super anxious. It also seems like she may have been trying to help.

You guys are way too paranoid.

Douche bags ask people if they want to borrow their study materials when the point is to show off how organized they are and how seriously they take the courses.

That's a possibility. But given how neurotic most pre-meds are and how many are gunners and douches, I wouldn't be surprised if she was being a ****.

But I wasn't there, so I don't know. I'm just explaining why the other poster made that comment towards you.

I wish the douche bags that I know were that helpful.

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from. I just disagree. We can agree to disagree.

No we can't. You either agree with me or you're wrong.

The dude's "friend" wasn't trying to be helpful; they were trying to feel helpful. That was 100% self-gratification disguised as altruism. I'll bet that chick would be the first to tell someone how she saved a cat from a puddle of water.

I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I wouldn't be surprised either.
