I am a NY resident and have always wanted to go to california, but I heard that most of the schools don't take out of staters. I might be doing an MPH program out there, while I am applying, but I guess they would have wanted you to live in cali for a year prior to applying...any suggestions???????

You might want to check if doing an MPH program will give you residency or if they will only consider you in the state for "educational purposes" and not a CA resident if you do it. I know you can get residency by living here a year, working, paying taxes, etc. To do that might put off your application by a year. But if you really want to go to a California school it might be the best way to go since it is very difficult to get in as a non-resident. Not that it is easy as a resident either, but you've got a better shot. There's also USC, Stanford and Loma Linda to consider regardless of your state of residency. Good luck and I posted something about establishing residency on the "UC applicants update" thread recently that you might find helpful.

Out of curiousity, why do you wanna go to med school in California?

Stanford, USC, and Loma Linda take out of staters. UCLA and UCSF take a couple too but you face long odds as an out of stater for those two.

I was thinking the same thing.

Statistically, Cali residents have the roughest admission process in terms of trying to land a spot in a state school. NY state has a ton of med schools that would make your life a lot easier come application season- why would you want to leave that? 😕
