Any people getting interviews with 6 in Verbal??

There are many people getting in with 6 on verbal... but don't be surprised if you don't even get an interview. I have 7 on verbal and no interviews yet (my other stats are pretty solid, however), but I am also prepared for the worst.

"Many" is a huge overstatement. It has happened, but in fact it is a beating the odds kind of situation. Folks with a 6 in any section really must retake if they hope to be competitive. No point trying to be the exception to the rule -- you want to be the rule.

What about in-state only colleges?

Rules should be broken for overall good candidate.

Depends on your other stats. Are you an URM?

Make sure you have a GREAT reason why you have a low verbal. You should show to your interviewer that you are working very hard to improve the inadequacy. Even better, if you can somehow explain to the interviewer that even though you have a low verbal, you're communication and comprehension skills are second to none(and give very concrete instances here), they might be willing to overlook one weak point .

Also, make sure the rest of your application is flawless and that you are extremely punctual in all your applications, meaning that you submit as early as possible. Remember, medical school is a rolling process, so the less seats there are, the more the committee will scrutinize your application b4 offering an acceptance.

Feel free to pm me with anymore Q's.

Interviewer: what's with the 4 in VR?

Applicant: even thought English is my SECOND language, my communication skills are SECOND to none!

well, according to MSAR, out of ~3100 applicants who have verbal score of 6, ~700 people were accepted last year. That's about 20% chance of getting in. Considering URMs getting in with low verbal(they have an advantage) + some people getting into carribean schools (stat-wise, it's easier to get in) + people getting into their state schools (state resident preference) + more applicants applying this year, I give you about 10% chance of getting in if you have solid stats and applied broadly.

at a verbal score of 9, the number of accepted applicants approximately equaled the number not accepted. So, if you want to talk about beating the odds kind of situation, ANY verbal score under 9 would be beating the odds.

But word. you want to be the rule, don't try to be the exception to the rule. But for my case, I have to be the exception, otherwise I will be a reapplicant next year.

I'm surprised you can even fill out the AMCAS with a mastery of the English language that yields a 6 on the VR section of the MCAT.

haha, little harsh, isn't it. I guess I am surprised at myself as well.

you have good scores in the other sections, so you're obviously smart.. what happened in verbal?

I decided to be cheap with all of my mcat stuff (i am under fap), so I studied with my friend's old kaplan book. It turns out that you have to use different strategy with CBT format (if you look at my first verbal score, i got 8 without any studying on verbal), and that new strategy totally screwed me over (stupid kaplan book told me not to do all the passages and guess, wth). When i was studying mcat for the last time, I finally decided to spend some money and bought ek 101 verbal. I was rocking that book, but when it came to taking cbt(aamc ones), my verbal was very inconsistent (ranging 7-13). But knowing that I don't have much time left to apply for this cycle, I decided to take a chance, and yeah, Busted.

So that pretty much sucked, but what can i do, I get what i deserve. I guess i can give them an excuse of not being a native English speaker --which is a valid excuse, sort of.

If I don't make it this year, I am definitely going to retake my mcat. And this time, i'm going to spend some money on classes and cbt materials. How am i going to pay for it? I don't know...🙁

anyways, good luck on your application process, armybound. It looks like you are doing just fine.

p.s. and yes, support fight for breast cancer... my mother is suffering as well.

yay, I'm not alone...I hate verbal, and english IS my primary language...
Don't lose hope. I know a person with my EXACT same stats that got about 4-5 interviews and ended up getting into michigan state university.
