From what i've gathered here on SDN and in a few books about matching, EM PD's don't care about research too much. So is there any point in doing EM research? I could use that time to hang out at the beach or read FA

If you want to go to the big name places, having research experience will really help your goal. Otherwise, surfs up.

I keep seeing "EM doesn't care about research." That's complete BS. Every single interview I had, I was asked about my research project. It definitely helped me to match.

If you put research down as something you did, then I would be surprised if they didn't ask you about it.

Some places will care, others won't. The more academic the program (or associated institution) the more likely someone on the committee will care. Otherwise I would check the publicly available match statistics for numbers on how many people matched in EM with and without research. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I recall this past year's match had a good deal (30%+) that matched into EM nationwide without ANY publications or productive research experience. FWIW.

It will help, the question is how much?

I'm wondering the same thing about psychiatry. I just can't see myself wanting to be involved in research, but I also want to be competitive for CaRMS. Luckily I think psych is even less competitive than EM.

55% of EM programs cited research as important and gave it a a rating of 3.1 (on a 1-5 scale, 5 = most important) when selecting applicants for interviews.

Those numbers for all specialties are 41% and 3.1. So it seems that more EM programs care, and they care just as all other specialties.
