Just wondering if you took any upper level bio courses, which would you recommend?

I was thinking of Physio 335, micro 303, or maybe immunology...or something else..

What are the difficulty levels of these, comparatively if you took them here?

Any other not-so difficult upper level bio courses?

Not to sound lazy or anything, just got some research and P-chem next year, so i'm trying to realistically put together a decent courseload.

Graduated from UW-Madison last year. I took micro (BacT) 303 & 304. It was pretty easy, just a lot of memorization, but nothing very difficult. Most immunology classes there are pretty difficult so I would advise against that. Never took a physio class. Another not too difficult class is BacT 325, its food science....not sure if there are any prereqs tho.

took physio 335 - decent class, easy material ,exams are challenging

what immunology, i took MMI 335 my sophomore year. awesome class. so much fun, great teacher. decent difficulty.

It was MM&I 341.

I heard the Physiology 335 has no curve, so its straight 90-100=A, and so on..so it would suck if they make the exams incredibly hard...

yeah, that's right, medical microbiology and immunology 341. fun class. i believe i had a dr. Manning. she was cool stuff. only difficult with it was that the tests were like all short answer. but just do the questions in her course notebook/text and you'll be fine.

in regard to phys 335, dr. lakuta (sp?) was the main dude when i was there. the player is wicked cool and brilliant. there is no curve however and it's like a 400 person class. lots of kids fail and most get C's or B's. you should be able to get all the points from the lab component so you have to figure on that boosting your final grade about 1 grade level (ie if you had a C average for exams, with all lab points you should get about a B). the exams are really focused on integration. so you really have to understand the material. you can't just memorize definitions or facts the night before. the class requires alot of work and the lectures will make you feel like the class is going to be a joke. but don't let that fool you. it's relatively easy to get a B, but it takes rather considerable effort to get an A.

Yeah, i had professors who will only give out 2 or 3 A's even when the class size is a few hundred students. A lot more deserved A's but he only gave A's to the top few kids, which is BS.

Probably wont take Physio 335 then, lol.

Since you went to the UW, do you know if they have a pre-dental committee or advisors specifically for pre-dental students?

Thanks.

Not that I know of. The pre-dental club would be your best bet for information. The advisor I had was pretty clueless about admissions to dental school etc. You are pretty much on your own when it comes to advisors at UW. I can try to answer any specific questions you might have....feel free to PM me (I cleaned out my inbox so I can receive messages now).

i couldn't agree more. after 1st semester, my orientation advisor disappeared. many of my friends also had problems such as missing advisors or the advisors didn't know their a$$ from their elbow. there is a predent club, however i dont know how organized they are. here is their webpage.

dr. benj, you mean the TV food science course right? oh god that class was a joke. i think everyone on campus takes that as an elective.

FS 120 rules, its soo easy...

The pre-dental society is not all that great, the meetings are never on a regular basis (or not at all)....Its just there is not much interest in dentistry on campus as they tend to push pre-med..I think out of the 6000 seniors like 40(?) applied to dent schools last year.

You said you are a kinieseology (i cant spell  ) major, right? Did you take Anatomy 328?

yeah, i'm a kinesiology/exercise science major. but i started my classes at my new school University of Minnesota-Duluth. did my anatomy and physiology up here.

i can't believe only 40 kids from UW-madison apply to dental school, but i can see the pushing towards the medical school. i mean if you go to UW as an undergrad and are in the sciences, chances are you were looking to go to medical school.

There might be others who applied to dental as a med school back up but i'm not sure..(the 40 were from the pre-dental club, but if you want to do dentistry, i would assume they would be at on the club's mailing list, as its the only source of info here) .Its ridiculous, one of the largest universities in the country and they dont even have dental advisors or anyone that knows anything about it..

At UW-GB, they have about 3,000 students and they have pre-dental advisors, its getting to be annoying...

that is a good thing kinda, i mean, it keeps another 100 kids from thinking about dental school who could have a better application. you can get all the advice you need from somewhere, you just gotta search out for it.

Yeah you're right...probably a good thing to keep dental admissions not well known, because it means less competition for us 😀

Hello from a madison alum. I am actually applying this cycle to dental school as well, for a second time actually, and I was not in the pre-dental society. It was formed when I was a soph, but I looked into it and it seemed usless. I am glad to know that I was pretty much right. Regardless, I think out of everyone I knew there, only a handful were even thinking about D school, and most were applying to med school. hopefully they all got in there and will not give us competition.
good luck and Go Bucky!

Go Bucky 🙁 Well, after the last football season and the Outback bowl, man they really got to turn it around lol....

Good luck to you on applying, hopefully it all turns out well for ya'...Are you applying to Marquette?

I went to UW-Madison, too. I didn't even know there was a pre-dental society until dr. benj told me about it in a PM (btw dr. benj, how is Minnesota treating you??)

Anyways, I didn't feel the need for any advisors. I just used SDN. If any of you have any questions I'd be more than happy to help.

Yeah, SDN has been great. The problem i'm having though is that I'm a CALS student and the Referenec letter Center is only open to Letter and Sciences students, so i'm trying to figure out how to do the recommendation letters.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I was in CALS, too (biochemistry). I had no problem using the reference letter center. Have you gone in and tried to open a file for your letters? I would do that ASAP when you get back from break- oh, and enjoy your long breaks while they last- I just had an exam this morning!

So unless they changed things drastically since I left (just graduated in May '04), the RLC should be open to all undergrads. It is just a program that is run through L&S.
And I would NOT send your letters to ADSAAS (or whatever they call themselves). I just sent all of mine directly to the schools and I had zero run-ins with the notorious "they lost my LOR" problem.

Hope this helps.

I havent tried to open a file yet, but i emailed the career center at CALS and they told it was only for L&S students. Maybe they were just wrong (as usual 😡 ) because i have seen other CALS people on this board doing it so i'll be sure to check it out.

Oh, btw, the reference center said something about them giving a professor an evaluation sheet. Does the professor write the letter or just fill out an evaluation, or what's the deal with that?

Again, thanks for the help.

So where are you attending D-school now? Gotta love those early morning exams! 😀

The prof fills out the evaluation, which really just serves as a cover letter for the LOR that they will write.

I'm at penn. It's been like a tropical vacation for me so far, but the people from California think it's quite the opposite.

I bet you guys are getting some nasty weather about now....

Also, i think i asked think on another post. i had H. Whitlock for O-chem (dont know if you know him) got a decent grade, never talked to him but had him for 2 classes. Is that enough to ask for an eval?

So any Madison or just Wisconsin in general people going to Marquette this fall?

JamesD- I PMed you

katiw- are YOU going to marquette this fall?
