Any present UNECOM students live in Portland? If so, please give me your candid opinion. Anybody hear of Backbay Towers? Is it any good? Again, Honest opinion here 🙂

I actually looked into Back Bay towers when looking for a place and found them to be pretty pricy. They also charge you about $100/month to park your car because the only parking is their underground garage. Other than that I really don't know much about them.

I live in South Portland in a new townhouse community called Conifer Woods. 2BR, 1 bath with full basement, W/D hookups. Plus we have propane monitor heat which adds up to a pretty cheap heating bill even in the dead of winter. I can give you the landlord's number if you might be interested.

If you are interested in living in Portland I recommend www.mainerentalguide.com. It's a pretty comprehensive website that lists some nice places in the area. Also try www.portlandme.about.com.
Portland is a geat place to live. When you want to get out and do something fun it is only right out your front door. Most classmates live in the Biddo/Saco area but there are a handful of us who live outside the area. And the commute to school is not bad-35 minutes tops. I personally need the separation of school vs home to keep my sanity.
Hope that helps- Good luck!

Thanks for the info! quite helpful.

I know some people will disagree with me, but you dont want to live in portland. Dont get me wrong, it is a great place to live, but even with no traffic the drive to school is 35-40 minutes. I live 15-20 minutes away in Old Orchard Beach and even this seems like too far. There is plenty of housing much closer to the Biddeford Campus, and you will probably pay much less. I was an undergrad at UNE and have been in this area for 5 years, 3 of which I have rented off campus so I have a pretty good understanding of the housing situation. Let me know if I can help.

Sure, if you live near school you save on drive time - to school. But ask the people who live on Hills Beach and Biddeford Pool how easy it is to go grocery shopping, out to eat, order anything other than Pizza for delivery, rent a movie, etc. The drive for me to do any of these things is about two minutes, and you can order almost any kind of delivery food in Portland. When I need something to wear for a rotation, want to see a movie, want to do ANYTHING, the drive never exceeds ten minutes. I can get DUnkin Donuts on the way to school without going out of my way. Sure, if you live in Biddeford you're close to school and maybe most of your friends, but that's really the only benefit. I lived in Portland since Spring of 1st year. I did live in Biddeford, but hated it and moved for the above reasons. Even during first year, you will have spare time. During heavy study days, you will still at times take a break for an hour. When I did that, I could go out to a restaurant with my husband, see a movie, etc. Anything fun - ie. anything NOT school-related - is a big excursion when you live near school. School will occupy most of your life, but not your whole life unless you let it. Believe it or not, biased as I am, I'm not recommending Portland as the best place for UNE students to live. I just want to erase the stereotype that it's all roses in Biddeford just because you're near school when really, in choosing a location you're choosing a set of problems. For me, Biddeford had more problems than benefits.

PS My quiet 3 bedroom apartment with offstreet covered parking for two vehicles and laundry in the basement in a nice family neighborhood is $750 a month.
