I've already gotten accepted to LMU-DCOM's post bacc--conditionally, though I'm trying to figure out what other SMPs I should apply to. LMU sounds amazing, but I like having options so I wanted to apply to some other places.

I'm mostly looking for something with a direct linkage. My academic failure in ug was a result of major financial problems and I took the year off to address those concerns, so hopefully, that problem won't be there when I start the SMP. I know my ug gpa is HORRENDOUS so I want a program that'll let me redeem myself.

I'm looking at applying to:

Western (I'm in CA so it's my top choice)
PCOM
Touro-NYCOM
UMDNJ
LECOM
AZCOM/Midwestern
William Carey

Like I said, I'd rather save money and not apply to programs that aren't that great/I have no hope of getting into. Any feedback? Which schools should I add/take off?

It's been really hard finding SMP info on some of these programs (cough cough William Carey) so if anyone has input as to how these programs compare to LMU-DCOM, that'd be great. Since LMU is kind of a backup right now, I wanna get rid of schools that wouldn't be as beneficial as LMU's program.

Thanks so much, guys! And I hope you guys have an amazing new year!

You have to keep Western. It's my number 1 and I think it's one of the only true SMPs on your list. What are you looking for in a school? Whats most important to you?

Yeah, western I'm keeping FOR SURE. It's local for me, I've heard amazing things about it from my friends who are in the program, and I'd regret it if I took it off.

I'm looking for:

1) something that'll basically ensure that I'm going to be going to med school if I bust my ass and work hard because let's be real, I have no hope with my stats right now.
2) 1 year program
3) no glide year
4) smaller program/school (I went to a MAJOR gunner school which really messed with my mind and it was hell.
5) not something crazy expensive

The reason I want to only apply to schools that compare to LMU is because LMU admin have been absolutely amazing and supportive so I'm getting really good vibes from them and I"d be happy to attend. Therefore, I'd rather not waste money applying to places where I won't even go. The one that I'm kinda on the fence about is AZCOM, VCU, and William Carey.

thanks!

I got this email from through a friend of a friend who is at LECOM and did their post-bacc:

The LECOM post-bacc program is one of the best kept secrets when it comes to those who have been rejected from medical school (I was one last year) It's the only program in the country that GUARANTEES entry the following year into their medical school as long as you maintain a 3.0 GPA and have the minimum MCAT. Think about it, If students meet these requirements they are an official medical student. They don't have to worry about other aspects of their resume such as volunteer hours, shadowing, etc. It's truly a put-up or shut-up year.

However, maintaining the 3.0 is easier said than done because the program is just as arduous and in depth as medical school, not to mention it's block grading ( A, B C... no +/-) Truthfully, LECOM Post-Bacc is probably one of the toughest in the country but it's also one of the cheapest. Many post-bacc programs from other schools cost just as much as medical school tuition (28K+) but the LECOM program tuition cost (as of last year) was only 6,000 a semester (12k total!). This low price allows possible students to sample a medical school atmosphere at a relatively cheap cost and decide whether becoming a physician is really what they want to do; and if not, their not crushed under significant debt.

Post- Bacc was a blessing in disguise for me because it gave me a year to mature as both a student and person which prepared me for this year and I have my highest GPA ever in my entire life. Not to mention I made a lot of very close friends that transitioned with me into medical school. I would heavily suggest this program to those who want to become a doctor but have something weighing their resume down against the field. But remember, this is either your get our of jail free card (become med student quick) or the final nail in your coffin because it's impossible to explain to other schools why you couldn't pass in a medical school trial run. Best of luck!
