I'm wondering if anyone has any good working knowledge of clinical PhD programs that really value clinical experience? I've got some research experience working in a private children's mental health clinic, but I've really done a lot more clinical work. I would like to go to a slightly more research-oriented program, but realize I'm lacking solid undergrad research experience.

I'm not interested in switching to a true RA job, and I don't intend to put off applying this fall to do so. I'm not really interested in PsyD programs, and I'm not looking to hear advice that I ought to look up the schools that are listed as 5 and below on the scale of orientation in the Insider's Guide to Gruduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology. I'm well-versed in the information the book gives on orientation- I am looking for anyone who really knows of any programs that value research experience, in the US or Canada.

Any ideas? Sometimes you don't think of applying to a school until someone mentions it, I'm hoping some of the SDNers will have a suggestions I hadn't thought of yet. Thanks!

University of Saskatchewan is really well balanced, that's about the only one I know of here in Canada.

U Montana and U Vermont both seem to value clinical experience to some degree. You'll have troubles getting into UVM without some pretty solid research experience though.

Thanks so much you guys, keep 'em coming!

West Virginia is heavily applied as far as PhD's go.

St. John's seems to value it.. Students do intakes in their first semester here and are very involved with the clinic from the get-go. St. John's also has a child-track which should interest you.

Thank you, nononora. I should have mentioned, I'm particularly interested in schools with a child-track or with faculty with obvious child-related specialties.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I'd love to hear more if anyone has any.

Penn State, perhaps?

I know UMontana has a child-track, and, judging from friends in the program, the PROGRAM is highly clinical, though I don't know about admission preferences, as I'm not going into the field myself.

Though University of Rochester is a very very good research program, they devote a good amount of time to clinical work, and are very well known for work with children and developmental psychopathology.

Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine's PhD program seems to expect clinical experience--at least a year, specifically--from their applicants. It's the program in downtown Chicago's Medical campus.

I have really appreciated you ideas. I know there must be other SDNers out there that are in a boat similar to mine- lots of clinical experience but perhaps not a ton of research experience who are looking for schools that want what we've got! I've applied to about half of the suggested schools in the past, and now I have a few more to add to my list. Thanks!
