Hi everyone,
This is my first post. It seems like a realy a great resource for pre-dental students. I'm excited to be a part of it!

I'm an RDH, and have been practicing for just little over 3.5 years. I'm currently in my pre-dental study and planing to apply dental school next cycle. I was wondering if there are any hygienist who are in the same boat as I'm, and wanted to ask you about few questions.

To start with, how hard is DAT test compare with the dental hygiene board exam, do you think that DAT test is hard and needs substantial amount of study time compare with the DH boards. I appreciate any inputs. Thanks.

im not an RDH but id imagine that the dental hygiene board exam is much different from the DAT in terms of scope of the exam. there arent any "dentistry related" topics on the DAT. its the basic sciences (gen chem, o chem, and biology) plus, reading comp, quantitative reasoning, and the PAT. i dont know of the time needed to prepare for the DH boards but i know it typically takes people a month or more to prepare for the DAT, of course that really depends on individual study habits.

Hello there!
I'm an RDH too and if I do not get in this year I'll reapply next year. As far as DAT goes, it is very different from our national board. First of all DAT covers basic sciences that normally studied in undergrad scope (general biology more than A&P that we all learned). Another HUGE difference that you have two years in dental hygiene school to get ready to take the board and the school is literally walks you through it, while for DAT you are on your own. So yes, you do need substantial amount of study time to prepare for DAT, considering that we have taken basic sciences a while ago. Congrats on your decision to continue your dental career. What year you graduated from hygiene school? What state are you from?

Hey guys-
I'm applying next cycle, too. I'd agree with everything the above poster said. Hygiene boards were much easier for me since it was all dental and much more interesting. I get bored with the DAT material.

I'm an RDH too. I'm applying this cycle and have already been admitted. I studied 2 1/2 months for the DAT. I agree with the other posts. The DAT is much more different than the National Dental Hygiene Board exam. You need to review bio., chem, and o-chem. Don't forget to practice doing perceptual ability problems. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!
