Hi, I have been pondering about this for a while. Since I am going to Tennessee for med school, should I relinquish my Cali state residency? Since I may apply for resident programs in Cali after four years, I was wondering whether they (UCs, USC and Stanford) might favor California residents for their residency programs? I know that Cali state residency are only good for tuition purposes for the UC systems but am not too sure about other benefits.

Hey, I posed a similar question to a doctor I spoke with at UCSF. She is the director of one of their residency programs and her advice about residency in CA if you go out of state for school was to try to do a rotation in California your 3rd or 4th year to show you want to come back. She also said her program considers your family connections. But she didn't seem to think that keeping residency was essential, especially if you are originally from California and do a rotation in the state. So that's one opinion on this. Maybe if you post this in the med students forum some of them will have good advice. Good luck.
