There is a law in Arizona that grants in-state residency for colleges to anyone who has completed a year of AmeriCorps/VISTA in the state:
Tuition Policy for AmeriCorps/VISTA Exception
Tuition and residency classification policy for Arizona’s three state universities...
If however, a student can demonstrate the following condition they may be eligible for an Arizona residency classification for tuition purposes without meeting the one-year durational requirement:
1. The student has participated in the AmeriCorps program or the Volunteers to Service to America program for at least one year in the state of Arizona.
I did an AmeriCorps term in AZ.
I currently live in Oregon, and want to apply to OHSU as an Oregon resident.
Definitely would love to go to UA or UA PHX as well - I have roots in AZ - friends, family, prior jobs.
I have used this exception before - got in-state tuition for a degree at ASU, despite living elsewhere when I applied.

My question is, is there some detail of med school applications, that would disallow me from being a resident of both states for admission purposes? The state schools in AZ preference AZ residents, so it would be a huge. Seems highly unlikely, but if anyone has experience, I'd love to hear.
Has anyone else used the AmeriCorps exception relating to med school?

I don't have any experience but would recommend reaching out to each med school (maybe even AMCAS) to inquire about your predicament. You mentioned you have used the exception before - were there extra forms to complete/did you have to fill out your app a certain way?

Yea there is a form you fill out, at UA or ASU -- it is definitely a thing. But I would assume there is some wrinkle that prevents someone getting med school residency for admissions via that avenue (e.g. you have to select one state of residence on a general admission form).

I'll definitely call UA - but would be super curious any experiences from others. I'm sure somebody has had this idea before!

I haven't heard about this exemption. A similar exemption exists in a few states for active military (counts as in-state even if you aren't from the state or serving in the state?). I would directly query the schools and anyone in Americorps who may be familiar with that policy. I'm guessing that this exemption also applies for applicants to Arizona law schools. Maybe other health professions programs.

Of course, go for it. If it's policy, use it. See if any current students took advantage of that exemption.

You may be able to list your address as OR but you'll list Americorps in AZ in your W&A section and that will get picked up. Do check with the university's med school admissions office to see if you should handle it differently than that to get considered as if you were an AZ resident. Of course, if it is for tuition purposes only and not a boost with regard to admission, then it won't matter until you matriculate and then you pull out your golden ticket to IS tuition.
