Hi guys!
Just wanted to know if thats still possible. I actually know lots an lots of true domicile program FMGs in PMR attending positions (NYC). But they all have been practicing at least for the past 10 yrs or so. Also let's say if a Carib graduate had more or less acceptable USMLE scores, and the rest of the package was being an RN (critical care 15 yrs), and licensed acupuncturist in a private practice...Is it likely to help or to hurt one's chances of getting PMR residency? I know it's more of a hypothetical question, but may be someone had some similar experience with that.
TIA 🙂

The match lists are on the school's websites. A small number of Carib students have found positions in 2004 and 2005. Try your luck at Albert Einstein in the Bronx. My sense is that this year will be more diificult.

Hi Billy Doc,

I am a graduate from a caribbean school and I have to say I have had a very promising interview season (despite hearing that this year PM&R was as competitive as anesthesia ...although I'm not sure about that). I think it is a case-specific situation. I'm not sure where you are in your education, but my best advice is to STUDY HARD and get good board scores/grades. You do have to prove yourself more than others, so do what you have to to stand out. One of the things that really helped me was research. I got involved very early and stayed involved throughout medical school.

Anyways best of luck...please PM me if you have specific questions....and remember no matter what they say there are exceptions to the rule and you can be that exception if you plan for it.

I agree with parmed's post. I believe that PM&R is continuing to become more competitive. I am sure it is as competitive as anesthesia for some programs but across the board it is not quite as competitive. As far as being an FMG, that should not stop you from applying. I have been involved in interviewing medical students here at GTUH/NRH and we have interviewed quite a few FMGs.

Again getting above average board scores, research and just as importantly rotating extensively are key aspects of your application.
