I'm trying to help a fellow first year med student out. He has a dwi on his record as a misdemeanor. Does anyone know how this will affect his chances at getting a good residency? Do they ask this stuff at the interview? Anyone experiance a similar situation? Thanks, any help will do.

I would doubt they ask anything relating to convictions during the interviews. Heck, they didn't ask if I had a felony on my recond when I applied to medical school, yet I still gained acceptance. I wouldn't be too worried.

This becomes more of an issue after one matches into a residency program and has to fill out state licensure application forms and hospital forms. This process involves a background check and if misdemeanors or felonies are filed, the state medical board and hospital will find out about them. You will be asked on your forms to expound upon any misdemeanors/felonies too...some folks take the risk of saying, "I don't have any misdemeanors or felonies." by checking off the "No" box to the question, "Have you ever been found guilty of..." Anyways, when this student is encountering this 4 years from now, tell him to be honest and forthcoming.

This is an interesting question for me as well...I have a 12 year old misdemeanor conviction for fighting, while in college. I am a bit nervous about this precluding me from licensure...anybody out there with first hand experience with misdemeanors?

Thanks!

My gut feeling is that these convictions from the long distant past won't be a huge obstacle.
