any single moms in pharmacy school?

Hi! I am a 38 year old single mom. I have been a stay at home mom for 7 years and now that I am on my own with my two young children (4 and 7) I have a lot to figure out. I would love to go to pharmacy school, but I would have to get a lot of loans to cover tuition and help with living expenses since I wouldn't be able to work. My question is...is pharmacy school doable for a single mom of elementary aged children? My mom is a pharmacist and I know she would say it is impossible because it absolutely consumed her life, so I want to get some other opinions before I even talk to her about it.

Also, after getting the pre-reqs, what are some back up options for those that don't get in. I would of course hope this wouldn't be an issue, but there's a lot to take into consideration here.

TIA for any info you can provide. I have been reading this forum for a long time. I feel like I am finally ready to pull the trigger, I just need some opinions for people who are living the pharm student life. 🙂

I'm a single mom in pharmacy school, but my son is a teenager, so I don't have the worries about childcare and the likes. It is very doable, you just have to manage your time wisely and have family willing to help you because you will need alot of time to study the material because it can start to pile up real fast and that's usually when your problems start.

As far as financial aid for expenses, alot of factors will be considered: what school you go to because some classify first year as undergrad which limits the amount of money you can receive. Als a graduate student, you will be able to take out about 30,000 a year which should easily cover your child care and living expenses if you stay away from those expensive private schools.

Are you divorced or widowed?

I knew a few single parents when I was in school. One was divorced with a grade school aged son, another was married but her husband got transferred before her last year, and the third one did not live with a husband but I never got a straight answer from her regarding her marital status. The third one had to leave school after regaining custody of her children (long story, but it was a good thing she never became a pharmacist).

Truthfully, you would probably have to go on welfare during the year. I don't know how all that stuff works if you chose to work during the summer.
