Can't you get some supplies from your school hospital?

You make a good point.....I guess I could ask around my hosp. Didnt realize they would let me take suturing kits home though? NHS can be a bit cheap at times, the downside of socialised medicine 😉

We used to get the crappy needledrivers in the disposable suture kits in the ED. Even if they were used, you could clean them with a cavicide wipe and it would be fine. And everyone openly filched suture from the operating rooms and it was accepted because they knew students used it to practice.

Depending on your connections (with a surgeon, with an OR nurse or tech), there should be supplies and equipment that it set aside for donations, repair or to be thrown out which may be made available to you.

In addition, many times there is suture which has been opened during a case but isn't used. This will be thrown out, so you can ask for it to be saved for you.

Outdated suture will be collected often for dispersal to surgeons going on mission trips.

And there has been many a student, myself included, who has liberated suture from the OR without asking.

As a last resort, you can purchase a disposable kit which will have some cheap equipment in it, but still usable for learning. I found this.

LOL, looks like a neat kit, although $79. The whole thing read like a late-night infomercial: "Order today and we'll also send you The Apprentice Doctor 'How to Examine Patients' Foundation Course and Kit, ABSOLUTELY FREE!" LOL

Yeah it looked a bit cheesy but the kit seemed decent (albeit $79).

thx for responses guys,

I'll take up your advice and hunt around the ORs and ask surgeons/nurses. Def want to start practicing...
