Hi everyone,

I'm currently on my first quarter of dental school. I have been contemplating switching to medicine even before starting dental school for quite some time now but been hesitant on taking action as I currently am in a pretty respectable school. There are many personal reasons as to why I have been contemplating about this and I figured I can still do so before getting any further into dental school. This has been stressing me out so much and affecting my mental health so I figured I would shoot my shot here to see if anyone has any advise or has gone through a similar path.

PS. I have also done my research on OMFS but it appears that the program itself is one of the most competitive specialties to get into. I wouldn't want to risk staying in dental school to not even qualify for this program down the road.

I have descent stats and I would pretty much just have to take the MCAT and up my medical-related clinical hours.

Thanks in advance.

Can’t offer advice but I wanted to say good luck to you. I was in a similar situation (Hence my name, JibsGuy), took DAT first volunteered in a dental clinic and realized I hated it. Took the MCAT and applied to medical school. I wish you all the best and I hope you accomplish it.

This may be a useful thread for you. A respondent successfully switched from dental school to med school.

Any updates on your decision?

I have two classmates (M3) that switched from dentistry to medicine and are doing just fine.

Do you know when they switched? I just heard medical school admissions don't like to see when people drop grad school

Could look into Dental Anesthesiology as well? It's a newish speciality I think but depending on what you're interested in this could be an easier path than switching careers entirely?

I’m coming from the future to tell you do it. If you have hesitations from dentistry, quit now before it becomes too late. I graduated from a foreign country in 2018, and I was supposed to continue 2 years here to get the license, but I couldn’t cope with dentistry anymore. My hand skills aren’t good, and I have noticed that since day 1, but I wasn’t honest with myself. If you have the same feelings, then quit now.
N.B: I know many people that are doing well after graduation. I’m just sharing my situation.

Well it’s also not that easy to hop into medicine either. I would have to take a gap year, study for MCAT, and risk nit getting into medical school and On top of that trying to get into speciality because I don’t want to be a PC

Yes, I agree with you. I’m just sharing my experience.
