Hi-

I am having trouble making a decision between a random set of schools: University of Virginia, Dartmouth, Tufts and Mt. Sinai.

I'm not much of a "big city" person, so the idea of New York scares me. I know the Tufts program is not particularly strong. I know Dartmouth isn't MSTP, although they're probably pretty close to getting it. I don't know that much about UVA's standing.

You all seem to know much more about the relative strength of programs than I do. Outside of the US News rankings, I'm not sure how to technically rate these programs. Any insight, comments or opinions would be much appreciated while I try to make this decision!

Thanks!

Of the schools you listed, I would shy away from Dartmouth because it is not MSTP. There are a number of reasons that it is wise to choose MSTP schools. Also, science wise I think UVa is the strongest of the schools you listed, however that's just my opinion and it depends on what area of science you're interested in. All of those schools are pretty much in the same tier, so with your list I would seriously consider the locations and any personal factors you might have. UVa is pretty far out there, but a nice area I hear if you like that sort of thing. Tufts is Boston, but I haven't been there so I can't comment on how good a part of Boston it's in. Mt. Sinai is in a great location in NYC, but if NYC isn't for you, it isn't for you.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck deciding!

I'll second what Neuronix said about Dartmouth.

Based on your apprehension about living in the city, I think UVa is your best choice. Tufts is located right in the middle of Boston. It is in a cool area because it is right on the edge of Chinatown (great lunch options), it is close to the theater district and a lot of cool downtown Boston locales...For those same reasons it is expensive to live near the school and not always the safest place to be. In terms of science, I would also suggest you head to UVa. But again, it depends on what you want to pursue in your graduate studies. Hope that is somewhat of a help, good luck with your choice!
