Not trying to discourage you, but I think you will have plenty of time to explore this your 3rd and 4th year. I would take a trip to Europe instead. Most of my classmates did research between their 1st and 2nd year of med school. More than half of these people eventually changed their minds and went into fields much different than the areas of research they did. This means the research counts for squat during residency application.
That said, most neurologists at academic institutions have some sort of research project cooking at all times. All you need to do is find one working in an area of interest for you and simply ask.
