Hello everyone, I want to know, are there any summer programs for high school students who want to become doctors or are interested in the medical sciences? If you do, please list the name in this thread or give a link to a website.

Also, if you have personally been apart of one of these programs what was it like? Was the experience enjoyable? Would you go back again?

Thank you for your cooperation 🙂

I attended Summer@Brown course for a week last summer. Good experience. I shadowed an ER physician and toured a lab where they had cadavers on tables. We were allowed to gently look around and sift through the cadaver's insides. The "class" was designed to simulate medical school lecture. The prof. and 3 or 4 medical students would give presentation on heart or whatver in the same style as medical school. Also we were split into groups to experience what medical schools use to teach students how to approach new cases. We are given a patient's history and symptoms and discuss what could be causing the problem. Outside of "class" (which only takes like 3 hrs a day) students are usually just eating or hanging out. I didn't feel like there was that much stuff to do in Providence. I spent a lot of free time just sittng in my dorm reading a book. Some students did not have such a fun time with shadowing a physician, either. One of them said that their physician worked in research and he basically told them about why they should never go into medical research. Overall, looking back, I would do it again but only if I knew I would be shadowing the ER physician because it was really interesting and it sparked my curiosity about emergency medicine. It was also reassuring to know that being around cadavers does not bother me because you don't want to get to med school and find out you have a huge moral dilemma about it.

Have you heard of NYLF on Medicine?

http://www.nylf.org/med/

I've heard mixed reviews about the program, but one of my friends went to the one in Houston, and said he loved it. It's not really a "prestigious" program, but from what I heard, it was very fun, and informative. It's pretty expensive though, so you might want to do some research before you do anything.

A few suggestions based on things I've seen:

1. Check with your state's public medical school. Some schools have summer programs. My state's school, UMass Medical, has a program for those considering healthcare careers. Never attended it, but it seems like a good idea for those wanting to enter medicine.

2. If you can't find a program, go to iTunes U podcasts. Some schools have "Mini-Med" podcasts, where they'll have video of lectures held at public medical school programs (for those wanting a look inside medicine). Those can help you out somewhat, although it doesn't offer nearly the same amount of experience that shadowing/a program will. You can learn some medical stuff over the summer, though.

3. Volunteer at a local hospital. Most hospitals have volunteering programs set up, and you get a chance to help out. Also, you may find a physician who is willing to let you shadow them.

Good luck!

Is there a med school nearby or in your city? I'd check with any med schools/universities nearby and see if they offers something like what you're looking for.

I know my med school does a yearly "mini med school" type summer program for local area high school students. I'm sure many schools do something similar.

I would check and see if your state has any government funded programs--several states have "Governor's School" for healthcare. These are typically month long programs that really allow you to immerse yourself in medicine. Moreover, they look fairly good on college applications as they tend to be selective. 😉
Just google "Governor's School Medicine.'
Also go ahead and check out NSLC: http://www.nslcleaders.org/summer-programs-for-high-school-students/medicine-health-care/. It's shorter and less intensive, but fun. 🙂

I went to this in high school. I had a blast! Went to the one at UCLA. Funny story - im actually roomates with someone who was in my group at NYLF! We ended up at the same med school 7 years later, haha.

Thanks for all the responses so far. And to all the people asking if there's a med school near by or in my state and so forth, I'm an international (I guess I should have included that in the OP) so my answer would have to be N/A 🙁. I'm mainly looking at the US because I don't see any programs like this in my country. Once again, thanks for the help.

Can't think of anything for international students, as most of the programs I can think of look for locals. Might be some programs for international students, but they'll be of the elite/expensive variety. Podcasts/iTunes U may be your best option in that case, as you can learn some things about medicine. Better yet, depending on your country (no idea where you live), you can try to find a physician to shadow or volunteer at a hospital.
