This is my first time posting on this forum so I'm sorry if this Is not in the right place.
I'm a senior in HS about to graduate. I'll be attending mississippi state university in the fall and am majoring in biology pre vet. I just have one question. What tests do I have take before I even start applying to vet schools? VCAT?

A few people have actually told me that it might be better to take the GRE right out of high school since most of it is math that you would learn from high school. Vocab, maybe so.

So the GRE is the only test I'll have to take? Can someone explain what the GRE is exactly? Is it different for everyone depending on their major?

The VCAT isn't administered anymore but here's a chart of what schools require what test: http://aavmc.org/testdeadlines.aaspx

Also, I didn't take the GRE until the summer before I applied to vet school, so you have awhile.

And there's a thread to introduce yourself if you want 🙂

There's a fair amount of statistics in the quant section. Statistics was not required or widely taken in hs where I'm from.

I mean, I didn't take it right out of high school, but it might have been better for me to since I hadn't had a math class (besides Statistics that I took freshman year) for a few years!

Thing is, the scores expire after five years.. so if you take it after high school and have to apply two times, you'll have to retake it for the second application cycle anyway.

Ah. My point was moot!

The GRE is the same for everyone who takes it. It's pretty similar to the SAT. There are books you can get to prepare for it when the time comes, but you really don't need to worry about it right now.

I took the GRE decades after HS and did pretty amazing just using the books. I don't think proximity to HS helps. In fact, you will probably overthink it. It is NOT a knowledge test in math for the most part, you just need to refresh a few basics.

And it's required BEFORE I start applying to vet schools? Is it like the sat/act where you can take it as many times as you want?

It's required by like October 1 of the year you apply. My date may be wrong there, but you can be actively working on your applications AND take the GRM. I started my applications in June, took the GRE in June, submitted my VMCAS by the end of August and other supplementals by the end of September.

I do know some schools differ in the dates that the GRE has to be in by. One school I was going to apply to said by July 31st- my test was scheduled in August, so I couldn't apply to that school. Mizzou's I think wasn't due until February!!

You can take it as many times as you want. Different schools will evaluate the many times differently.... and it is way too early for you to figure that out now, as they may change their policies in the next few years.

You can take it once every calendar month, unless they have changed the rules since 2010

Veterinary medical college application service... Like the common application for vet schools

So what are the VMCAS?

One thing I can recommend is that while we're a great resource here, looking into accredited veterinary schools will also give you an idea of what you'll need to apply and might even give you a more thorough and accurate one. For example, they'll mention needing the VMCAS and you can Google that and get some information on it directly from the source. 🙂 Your academic advisors at college should be able to help you understand more, too, including about the GRE!
