New here!

Just curious how many Texas non-trads are applying via TMDSAS this cycle. I hope to send out my app on May 3rd (if my letter writers can upload by then).

I'm also a Texas non trad applying in May. I hope to get into TECOM in fort worth.

@ed101123 I have two friends that go there right now and they love it. I'm applying to all of them

Yeah ill be applying to all Tx schools but I own a home just outside fort worth so really want TECOM. I prefer DO over MD anyways. I see a lot of MD's use narcotics to "solve" every type of pain issue. Its a philosophy I disagree with. I've heard of the one in Austin, but didnt know about the rio grande one

Well you guys are in luck because those two schools are the most Non-trad friendly of the Texas schools. Ed; if you want to make a good impression at TCOM have a good D.O. LOR and if you can have your shadowing D.O. show you some OMM stuff. They like to see people have experience with what makes D.O.s different (Even tho in reality it doesn't matter). Also, talk about how you have a house there, it's your top choice, and you love the Fort Worth area.

Chlorini; Interviews are very chill at UTHSAC just normal conversations, I'm sure they'll be interested in your family life. when I interviewed there they also asked questions about my experience with shadowing in the Healthcare field and are looking for team players. Be sure to read over your personal statements the day before the interviews because most of the questions come out of that. One interview will be a faculty member and one a student. The student just gauges to see if you are a "fit" for the school, but be sure to take it just as serious as the others.

As a non-trad they are going to be very interested in what makes you unique and how you bring in diversity with your non-trad experiences. They are much more concerned about who you are and why you want to go to that school. In all my interviews only one of them asked me the dreaded "why medicine" question unlike the traditionals' which seem to be asked that at every school, YMMV.

should i even apply to TX schools as a non-resident? i have relatives in TX and want to live in TX - would that be sufficient reasons? 🤐

+1 non-trad Texas resident here. So, TCOM and UTHSCSA are the non-trad friendly schools? Bummer, as I'm not applying to TCOM...hope I can get some love from the others.

Also, can I just say that I am super eager for UT (Austin) to tell us how we can apply? I know they won't find out their accreditation status until this summer, but I just want to know already! I'm guessing they will have us use a separate app, since we can't add to TMDSAS after submitting...?

Good luck to all!

@Maruko I think it depends on your stats. If you have above average stats for specific Texas schools and/or you have a compelling reason to attend a school I think it's worth a shot. You'd really have to emphasize wanting to practice in Texas. I'm applying out of Texas, too.

@SweetCaroline7 where do you want to go? Also, I recommend applying to TCOM anyway. My friend told me Texas schools can see where you apply to and it costs the same.

Oh I don't know. That's info from a friend that just graduated from Texas Tech El Paso. She applied 5 years ago so things are probably different. Whatever it is, I know it's relatively cheap.

@Chlorini, I'd be happy at any Texas (or OOS) med school. Im going to submit TMDSAS as applying to all, but I won't fill out the TCOM secondary. That's what I meant when I said I'm not applying there. I have almost zero experience with DOs and I couldn't speak intelligently about 'why DO.' I also don't have a DO letter. I would definitely consider adding DO experience and applying there if I needed to apply again next year.

Where did you see the TMDSAS notification about UT Austin? I'm not going to delay submitting for it or anything, but I just hope you're right and we can add it later.

@Maruko, you're right. It's a $140 flat fee.

Applying to Texas schools Next Year! (I just wanted to feel included...) lol

I live an hour outside of Houston, so my life will be greatly simplified if UT Houston or Baylor want me - but I am applying to them all... And if I need to move to El Paso, I guess it is about time I learned Spanish anyway... 😀

@SweetCaroline7 I read it on the TMDSAS handbook for 2016 (it's on page 4):

The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine

The two new medical schools will not appear on the application until they have received LLCM accreditation. Although neither school will initially appear on the application, applicants will be notified via email once each school becomes available for application. The email will include instructions on how to add each school to your application.

Ed, yeah I know. I'm working as a scribe right now part time and it seems like every person that walks in to the ER gets a CT and narcos :/ I wonder if it's due to liability?

I'm not going to say to keep my anonymity (My avatar will easily give me away if anyone understands it), But Im going to one of the Top 3 (Baylor/UTSW/UTH). I got interviews from all the Texas schools (except TT at Lubbock) and pre-matched to the ones around my LizzyM ([GPA x 10] + Mcat score = X) score >73.

SweetCaroline7, I did not mean for my post to give you doubts. If your stats/research is good all schools will be an option for you; I'm merely saying that UT SA and TCOM have more non-trads than the other schools and seem to be much more interested in them. For example the only other non-trad I met at UTSW had 2 PhDs, yeah. I will have to be realistic with you about Dell though, I honestly think they will go for a 35+ average MCAT and 3.8+ Average GPA. They are going to be looking for the brightest since they are going to be using some pretty interesting curriculum and will look for students that can handle stress very well since they need to be adaptable (I'm not saying you can't). From what I understand they are copying Duke which has a median MCAT/GPA of 35/3.8.

I have absolutely no connections in Texas and applied anyways. My numbers are average but I was accepted to two schools and will likely be matriculating to one this year. The tuition rates are excellent and most schools don't have secondaries.

My stats were average for allopathic schools, did not have a compelling reason to attend school in Texas and did not emphasize wanting to practice in Texas. I think I was a"good fit" but really have no idea why I was more successful in Texas than my home state.

Just submitted TMDSAS last night. That application took me over 15 hours to fill out. The worst question: "Fill out every job you've had since graduating high school." That. Took. Forever.

Non-trad Texan here too and planning to submit my application this coming week. Filling out my education background was the roughest part for me (lets just say it was less than stellar fresh out of highschool 🙁) so I'm planning on applying broadly and looking into out of state MD and DO schools. Anyone know of some out of state DO schools to apply to in the general region?

I'm not a Texas resident (anymore) but I'm applying. I have family in the state and my spouse has some potential job offers in the Houston area. I'd love to apply to Dell too, when it becomes available, but I don't think I'd be able to handle going to a school several hours away from the house. Good luck to everyone!

Keep on chugging everybody! I'm hoping to apply next year. Texas A&M is friendly to nontrads too, with over 50% of matriculants being nontrads.

Aside from UTH, give some serious thought to UTMB and A&M. You can duo clinical years in Houston for both of those.
