Hi All 🙂

not sure if any vet med students visit these boards (it seems to be mainly med...) but I thought I'd give a shout out just in case! I start at UG in September, moving in about 3 weeks 😀

Anybody else out there?

My cousin qualified from the vet school at Glasgow University in 2002 and I accepted (but subsequently turned down) a place at the medical school there. Glasgow is a great city...you'll have a great 5 years there!!

I'm considering applying to european (mainly UK and Irish) vet schools next year. can you give me any information on how the process works? Thanks, e

Trinners - Its good to hear! I'm really looking forward to the whole process (school, living there, etc..) I live in the middle of a desert right now - so the change of scenery will be greatly appreciated!!

erin - I'm not sure if it will be much help, but I applied to UG through VMCAS...that way I got around having to apply through UCAS, no extra application/reference letters/etc. I found the application process to be fairly straight forward (as straight forward as it can be I suppose), and I went for an interview in Washington DC in March. They actually offered me my spot at the interview (from what I hear, this is very very rare.... I suppose because of the amount of hands on experience and husbandry that I had within my application, they wanted to know if I would be interested in entering straight into my second year)... Anyway, email me if you have any other questions about applying (anywhere really, it's such a long process!) I'd be happy to give any pointers i can 🙂

AHAHA TRIN, for a moment I pictured you with the cute animals and was laughing. But I misread ur post 🙂. lookingforluck, best of luck! (especially in trying to understand them 🙂. I had a glaswegian hairdresser once who kept trying to talk to me. And all I could do was smile and nod for 45 minutes)

A thick Glaswegian or Scottish accent can take a bit of getting used to. The Scots also have their own slang, for example, "tatties" are potatoes; "bairn" is a baby; "baffies" are slippers... There's loads of them but they're a few just off the top of my head... 🙂

I'm crossing my fingers that I'll be able to understand people at school... The prof's that came to do interviews were very easy to understand, so i'm hoping that the rest will be that way! As for the market man, or the taxi driver... I'm sure they'll take a bit to get used to 😉

D'ye no hae taters?

You'll get there in the end! Generally, lecturers and suchlike won't have particularly broad accents, but the locals... It really is a different language up there, but I was picking it up within a week when I was up there, so shouldn't be too difficult for you...

BTW, they will try and tell you what a fantastic drink IrnBru is (pronounced Iron Brew). Don't do it!

*makes a mental note about the Iron Brew*... 😉

That just sounds deadly!

Irn Bru is nectar, don't listen to Fiona! 😀

:scared:

You don't have Scottish blood do you Kev?

well I do and I wont hear a bad word about Iron Brew - best way to rot your teeth and quench your thirst.....

..try the chew bars - probably the quickest way to rip the teeth out of your napper...if they havent already rotted from the drink of course...

superb stuff...

get used to the phrase 'big man'....even if you are not big, nor a man.

Well actually yes, I hail from Inverness

*confused look* chew bars?... do I even want to try to guess?

hello 😳)
I'm starting Medicine at Glasgow in September.... really looking forward to it!! You'll have a fantastic time over here.... and i'm sure you'll get used to the accent really quickly!!

Hi I have been accepted to UCD and would just to hear your opinions and/or experiences on the school and the reasons why you choose this school over others? It is not AVMA-accredited at the moment. Does anyone know when this will happen for UCD? Thanks!

have you heard anything about UCDublin's new curriculum or the teaching style and/or examinations? is it very much like Glasglow's and less like Royal Veterinary College in UK? are there more exams spread out throughout the semester versus one important exam after every term? thanks!
