Hey everybody,
I'm a first year at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and a big SDN fan (it was ALOT of help to me while applying), so if anybody has any questions about the school let me know (especially anyting to ease pre/post application worries).
Thanks!
Keith

Keith-
I am a UAB hopeful. I was just wondering what my chances are of getting in from out of state. I am a Louisiana resident. Also, any application advice specific to UAB would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I know there are a lot of people in our class from out of state. What are your ties to Alabama? I would also try to formulate a solid answer as to why you would rather go to UAB than Tulane, etc. if you are asked that in an interview. E-mail me if you have any more questions.

Keith-

I'm also trying to get into UAB out of state. I got the secondary and as for ties to Alabama. I lived there for about a year before high school and then I moved to Carrollton, in Georgia which is about ten minutes from Alabama. I was wondering what my chances are realistically of getting into UAB out of state and how do your classmates that aren't from alabama fit in among all of their Alabama peers.

That's at least a tie to Alabama. I wouldn't make a big deal of it, but it might be worth mentioning. Our class' stats for acceptances can be seen at http://main.uab.edu/uasom/2/show.asp?durki=3614 . It shows a ratio of one out of state student per every ten in state students (and while that's a large ratio, its not an impossible ratio by any means).
As for fitting in, you will be fine. I went out of state for college, and I was pleased to find that Birmingham was a lot more metropolitan than I remembered and therefore a pretty easy place to fit in. If you have any more questions about this, just e-mail me.

skhichi,

When did you get the UAB secondary? I'm still waiting on that thing to finally arrive. If it ever comes...

I didn't even get my AMCAS processed until the middle of October because a transcipt from a school I took general education classes at never got sent (i was sooo angry), but I think I got my secondary between Thanksgiving and Christmas (it may have even been later). It was an online one, and it was pretty easy to do.
I really wouldn't worry about it much at all at this point. Its definitely not too late.

Ok how is Ashley doing...I went to school with Ashley since sixth grade and I just wanted to check up on her.

i read in the MSAR that they like to see students who have done some type of humanitarian work, so that if they are called on, they can help serve the rural population of alabama, or something. I'm just wondering what your opinion was of how important humanitarian (domestic or international) efforts played in the admission process. I ask because last year i organized a medical trip to mexico during my spring break and raised about 15K for it, and this summer, i'm debating on whether to go to Kenya to work in an aids clinic. I genuinely want to go, but i could see my month of may also being spent on getting my amcas ready to go.

GO TO KENYA!!!!
I can totally see this. I went with a group from my college to run a clinic in Peru twice and I organized it once, and this came up a lot. But it is more important to do these sorts of things to meet and help people abroad and learn more about the world we live in. Please don't make this decision to go to Kenya based on being able to turn your AMCAS application in a month earlier.
Reply to me off list or e-mail me if you want to talk about this decision some more.
