I just recieved a late acceptance, whew whew! about two days ago. Dr. Coleman said he will be sending me an emergency packet. anyway, what is the first day of school? Do any of you know of anybody who has an extra room or any suggestions about where to stay? I plan on going up there thursday to look around for places, but if i could find a roomate, it would make things much cheaper.

Congrats! We are in the same class then. School starts next Monday, Aug. 8th. We have orientation 8am-5pm all week. I have heard this is pretty much information and a chance to get to know each other. As far as a place to live, there are lots of apartments and condos. Try the classifieds at memphisflyer.com, I have seen some ads for apartments and houses to rent in there. I think you could probably contact a realtor down there as well, just explain your situation and they might offer some advice. Memphis has a lot of good neighborhoods and a LOT of bad ones. It really depends what kind of neighborhood you want, and how you define "safe". I will look on the internet and see what I can find that looks decent. I would be soooo stressed out (but happy!) if I were you right now! I wish I could help, but my husband and I have friends stopping by on and off for the next few weeks. If you want, I'll give you my phone number. I'll be back in Memphis this weekend. Good luck!

Most people live on Mud Island. Quite a few live in Midtown. Some live downtown in Echelon apts at the ballpark or Gayoso Place. I live in a house in East Memphis. Some even live out in Bartlett, TN. Then there are some that live in West Memphis, AR. As you can see, there are many places to choose Any apartment on Mud Island would be fine to start out (you really can't go wrong there). You could also live on campus until you got a feel for the area.

Wow, Congrats! I'm also in your class, so I'll see you Monday. We are supposed to report to Humphreys A-202 at 8:00 am(Just in case you don't get your packet on time). I'm living in the Horn Lake/Southaven area in Northern MS. It's a really nice area but is about a 20 minute drive. Also I still have the Sunday Classifieds laying around here somewhere. If you want them, let me know. Congrats again and good luck finding a place.

I think you're supposed to bring your drill and a sharp needle.

I am taking my backpack w/ a notebook/folder in it, b/c i would imagine there will be paperwork that they will give us and it will just be easier to keep up with everything.

Thanks Moni. I hadn't thought of all the paperwork. I guess I'll take my backpack then. See you Monday!

Try the dorms behind the school. There cheap, close and safe. I stayed there during my first year at UT. If you live in the dorms then you can go home next summer instead of feeling like you have to stay in Memphis because you have a lease. You're going to be spending a lot of time at school this year, the closer you are the better. Another thing, you can wake up at 7:30 for your 8:00am classes. I saved so much money after living in the dorm my first year, I spent the entire next summer in Costa Rica.

This brings back a lot of memories. I lived in a little apt complex on Central Ave and Hollywood, next to CBU. It was across from Chickasaw Gardens where I used to jog around that lake. I could wake up at 7:15 and be in my seat at 8:00.

How are the dorms? Are they apartment style or just the regular one room dorms? On an unrelated note... does anyone know where we should park on Monday?

Hi there classmates!
Can anyone tell me where is Humphreys? Is it the same as GEB?
I was planning on parking in the paid lot behind Dunn on Monday. Does anyone know how much does the parking permit cost? We have to bring a cheque but i don't know for how much.
Thanks and see you all soon!

I have heard that the dorms are apartment style, four bedrooms two bath , kitchen and a living room. They look really nice from outside.

Yes, Humphreys and GEB are the same thing. As far as parking goes I called the parking services Thursday and asked about this. She gave me 3 lots to park in. I'm out of town right now so I don't have them right in front of me but I think they were G, I, and J. I won't swear to that. I'll check as soon as I get home which should be around 6 or 7 and post what the right lots were. Oh, and to find out which lots are which are just do a search on utmem website for parking services. Hope that helps. See you tomorrow everyone.

I stayed in the dorms my first year. The main advantage is that you get a T lot parking pass which extends from the dorms to right in front of the Dunn Dental building. I moved out after the first year, but would have probably stayed there the entire time had I not gotten married. Very convenient. Good roomates are key.

That's another good point. You get a T lot parking pass which you will get to keep all four years. The dorms are 4 bedroom and 2 bath apartments with kitchen. Everyone gets there own private sink. It's not the Ritz-Carlton, but it's a safe, inexpensive place to rest your head, until you get to know the city.

OK, checked my notes and G, I , and J were the parking lots that I was told were OK to park in. But take that at your own risk. I have no clue if the lady I talked to knew what she was talking about or not! 🙄

Thanks. It might just be me, but does anyone else find that parking map to be painfully hard to read? See you all tomorrow.
