Here's just a question to all you veteran OD's or any OD's for that matter:

Have you noticed your phoropters fogging up with certain patients? (either they are breathing too heavily, or they are sweating immensely) In any case, it only happens with some patients.

Any tips on preventing that? I've tried moving the forehead rest adjuster to move them further, but that still doesn't stop some patients from fogging the lenses up.

Thanks for any suggestions.

We seem to have that problem more often in the winter. Now we have a little travel size hair dryer behind the exam chair that we use to warm up the lenses before we bring in the patients. It seem to help on most, but there are those few who just keep fogging it up.

yeah, sometimes I wonder if I can put rain-x or scuba mask de-fog on my lenses. I have to stop at least twice a day for people fogging up the lenses every minute or so.

yeah i've been trying different things to no avail.... but whenever i have a 20 year old not seeing 20/20, and telling me everything is blurry it's always the lenses fogging up

that's a good idea... i have actually found some patients fogging up the lenses by breathing upwards (like, when you lift your lower lip and breath hard)...

or mascara... that big black blob-o-makeup is definitely hard to see through 😉
