HI, I'm currently a PGY1 at a university, unopposed FM residency but am planning a switch into IM. I simply don't like OB and Peds enough to justify staying. Also I love IM and hospitalist work. Initially I thought with Fm you can "do it all" but I'm finding that to be less and less true unfortunately. To do FM right for your patients and yourself you have to love and be excellent at IM, Peds and OB. I'm doing very well but the fire is only there for IM. Yes, I wish I would have figured this out sooner but such is life. I'm a DO with strong grades, extra-curriculars and COMLEX step 1 and 2 scores. I only applied FM initially. Also, and less importantly (but still somewhat of an issue), I miss my family in NC.
My current options at this time, as I see them, are:
1. Somehow find a match through SOAP this year to start July 2017
2. Apply and interview during my FM PGY2 year and start July 2018.
3. Lastly, to address the location and family issue: Stay in FM but speak to a program in NC that I am very close with (PD and attending have asked if I wanted to switch into their program, only didn't choose as #1 because I assumed being close to home would somehow be an issue--I was wrong).
My questions:
a. Does anyone here have any experience switching?
b. Does anyone know how to find IM programs that used SOAP last year?
c. Any other advice (I asked a similar question on the IM forum)?
Thanks a lot all.
