you'll be hard pressed to find them anymore. Army GMO's have been essentially phased out. If you want to do flight surgery or one of those type of jobs, you can always to them post-residency. (completing FS school during medschool is actually not that uncommon).

GMOs have not been phased out. Programs in the Army, e.g. anesthesia, radiology, still set aside 1-3 spots per year for people coming back from the desert. In my transitional class at least 4 of us will be leaving to GMO land next year, including all those who want to do PM&R.

i stand corrected. still though, the numbers of army intern to GMO folks doesn't hold a candle to navy intern to GMO folks.
GMO tours aren't that bad if you get good ones. i just want to get my training done while i can. it's not as much an issue for army, but the navy, for example, cut the number of peds slots available. so now there are more GMO's coming back then spots to put them. hopefully this doesn't spread to other services/specialties. . .
