What do you use to stain your gels?

I've probably seen 10 different protocols each recommending 0.005% Crystal Violet for 1+ hrs, but when I use that, it stains the whole thing (colonies AND agar).

Anybody got any work arounds?

Our lab routinely washes after crystal violet fix / stain with PBS at 4C overnight. This frequently requires >3 washes.
