What did/do you think? They emphasize very different things.

I like the kaplan book. I think anatomy is a bit of a luck-of-the-draw situation, since there are so many topics and only a couple questions on it. I seem to be doing OK on practice tests with only kaplan lectures notes and qbank under my anatomical belt.

the book is pretty thick, but lots of pics. Do you think I can have it down in 5 days? I am kind of a slow reader too--but im getting behind my sched, so that's the max i can allocate for the first run. Neuro was my best subject in school, so that's a plus, i imagine.

You're also doing it for neuro? The neuro seems a bit better in kaplan--what do u think?

I did the neuro embryo and gross segments in the kaplan in 3 days, I plan on going back and reviewing them for an additional day if i get the time. I thought the neuro was quite well done, and like you, neuro was a relative strong suit coming in for me. I think in 5 days, with reasonable background, you could know the book very well!

I did the Kaplan anatomy and HY anatomy in 2.5 days and then I did the Kaplan and HY neuro together in 2 days so I think you should easily be able to do it in 5 days. How many days are you alloting for your study schedule? I have a 26day study schedule (May 13- June 8) and I'm afraid I may have spent too much time on this low yield subject. 🙁

I hear neuro is pretty HY... name the lesion questions frequently come up, and there is a lot of overlap with path. Spending 2 days on anatomy out of 26 might be a bit of overkill, but its not a huge deal! Just keep pounding away on your other subjects🙂

How would you compare the books, in gross and neuro? Seems as if gross has different emphasis in each? Find one better than the other?

Janders: Are you going to do HY embryo also, or just stick with kaplan?

I might hit HY embryo if i have time ( I think I will ). My other option is to use my school's embryo online-book. Its heavily illustrated and has lots of short video clips of the embryo in motion. Not sure how quickly I can get through it, but i suspect i will retain better from it.

How would I compare them? Its almost like apples and oranges. Kaplan focused heavily on actual anatomy ie were things are located and what there function was. HY was more like an overview of the blue boxes in Moore and Dalley (sp) and was pretty skimpy on naming nerves, vessels, muscels, organs (yeah even organs) and were things are located other than the fact that it had a lot of imaging pictures. B/c they were both so different I found that they complimented each other very well. The neuro I actually leaned a little heavier on Kaplan b/c it gave a better description of brain lesions and disease as well as description of what parts of the brain do what. HY again had lots of imaging and focused a lot on pathological cases but not so much on describing the presentation of the case. I actually liked Kaplan better for the neuro part eventhough it didn't have as many pathological brain lesion mentioned it did seemed to mention the big ones and gave a good description of them.

One more thing, I think Kaplan did a great job on covering the special senses areas of Neuro too like the eye and ear which high yield again just really talked about pathology of those organs again (but HY did describe the all useful webber and Rennie (sp) tests)

I know you said they complement each other well, but I wonder if its overkill to do both kaplan anat and HY gross? I mean that time could be speant doing other more impt stuff, but whatever, i guess i'll start with kaplan.

hey hidden,
i just finished HY Gross and i don't have kaplan, but i must say thay i THINK HY may be the best bet. i have not taken step 1, so, i'm no expert, but i thought HY gross was very oriented to the way we will PROBABLY see questions. there is a good paragraph or 2 on the gross and i just got my netter and went about as far as the book did. then to read the whole path inteagration reinforced my path. i mean, will they really ask us about the minute artery /vein stuff? i don't know and i don't know kaplan, but i will say HY has been highly reccommended and i think, if used with a netter, may be the best use of dwindling time. then again, i don't know. it took me about 15 hhours to get trhough and i am slow.
best of luck on a hard decision.

Thanks streetdoc. I still have some time to go, but I think i'll read it along with a blue box everday. If you don't mind, please let me know whether it was suffice for your exam after u take it. Thanks.

I think both Kaplan and HY are good and they DO emphasize different things.

Here is a newer book - forget the anatomy in here, but there are clinical correlations in here (probably take a day to read those) and they may be worth your time. The author just lists the big clinical correlations through the book and they are very good and probably very relevant to USMLE. Just take a look at this book when you get a chance to see what I am talking about.
