Context: Currently in the Midwest and girlfriend is in another state. Trying to schedule rotations near her but cold calling docs I don't know is hard and rarely to I get a response. Clinical Nexus has a ton of available rotations in her area. Is it reasonable/Allowed to just apply for random rotations on there (as long as its not an audition)? Anybody have experience doing this?

Can’t you do elective rotations/non audition rotations off vslo/vsas?
Yes, clinician nexus is one alternative. But it's limited to very few programs and among them are many HCA hospitals.

Or you could pay thousands of dollars through AMOpportunities, but I think this is more for IMG/FMG.

Could you do this? Sure. But why you would waste your time at an HCA cesspool is beyond me. I’ve never heard of a non-HCA hospital, that was somewhere I’d want to rotate at, using clinical nexus but hey maybe I’m wrong
My school rotates at mostly HCA sites and they are actually the only sites were have with residents and actually nice facilities (all brand new) lol. I agree as residency institutions they are bottom of the barrel, but as a rotating medical student they've been good. Also, not really concerned abut the quality as much as I am location.

I did a few rotations through this. The upside is it's much less cumbersome than VSAS and free. The downside is it's all HCA

I mean for elective rotations/non audition/non sub-I rotation it doesn’t matter tho since the location is more important

How hard is it to get “accepted” for the rotation and how long did it take to hear back? I sent out 4-5 apps and uploaded everything. Is it like VSAS where you gotta apply like 3-4 places per slot?

I applied to 2 places for the exact dates I wanted and got both

I'm in the process of setting my entire fourth year through VSAS/ClinNexus. Well, Clinical Nexus for one rotation. The rest will be through VSAS to allow me to complete fourth year back in my home state. Waiting for the hospitals catalog to open up this next week and will be firing away all sorts of applications.

So if you use VSAS can you apply to any specialty and it’s not an Audition rotation?

Oh yeah. It's for "visiting students" by definition. Auditions are either specified as "sub-internship" or "acting-internship" or by the fact that they are scheduled during audition season (july-Oct/Nov). But the home programs offer dates well past that time frame. I recommend contacting the vsas point-person listed on the site of a hospital you're interested in rotating in after audition season and see their policies. For example, one program I plan to rotate at after interviews are all over says they limit one rotation/student from Jul-Nov. Then unlimited rotations after that. Plus, the rush of applicants are for the early auditions, they have less demand for the rotation dates in the Spring, for example.

Careful with HCA. One of the programs I applied to for IM ended up shutting down AFTER THE INTERVIEW CYCLE. It was wasted time and effort and a huge money dump for anyone traveling out of country for it.
