Anybody heard from U. of Nebraska?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Yes, if you get a secondary you also get an interview. The secondary is really nothing though...
Not necessarily. From what I understand, only in-state students are guaranteed interviews. Have you heard otherwise?

I am ouf of state. I had to pay a fee to get my AMCAS considered, later they sent me a secondary to fill out. It is my understanding that for out of state folks if you get the secondary to fill out you also interview. It all came together, the secondary and pick the interview date...

I haven't ever heard of an out-of-state applicant NOT getting an interview from UNMC. The flipside is that y'all [out-of-staters] have virtually no hope of getting in so unless you like visiting Nebraska, or can double up a Creighton interview with a UNMC interview, or are just a Cornhuskers fan [Go Big Red!!!]. I wouldn't waste the $$$$ to come out this way.

Sorry to sound so discouraging but the numbers are definitely [as is the case with every out-of-state person everywhere, not just UNMC] against you.

I wouldn't say that!!

There are many circumstances that need to be considered with out of state applciants..

for example: for me, I am considered a michigan resident, but I had lived in Nebraska for the first 15 years of my lfe before moving. Therefore, I believe I should have a real shot at Cornhusker land........we'll see........good luck efex101........do you mind pming me your stats???

Byt the way, it looks like Cornhusker football might be back!!! Go Big Red!!!!

Actually,
They only interview a small portion of the out-of-staters, but the chance of an acceptance after the interview is ~50/50.

According to the 03-04 MSAR:
495 out-of-state applicants
88 out-of-state interviews
16 out-of-state new entrants

The 50/50 # I stated above was from personal experience gleaned from having interviewed at UNMC as an out-of-stater. If I recall correctly, they had interviewed ~60 for the 02'-03' cycle and offered ~30 places, of which ~14 were accepted. Hope this helps!

Do you know if there is any hope for entrance at UMCC for a Creighton student (out-of-state) with very average stats? (3.4 and 25)

Everyone I know who's from out-of-state that goes to school in NE has gotten an interview at UNMC so I guess that (at least going by DALABROKA's numbers) you've got a 50/50 shot.

A girl I worked with who was a ND resident that who went to UNL had a 3.8 and a 25 (10-VR, 7-PS, 8-BS) and solid EC's who didn't get in.

[edit] You won't be speding much to interview there ($30 AMCAS + $25 secondary fee + gas $ to drive a mile and a half from CU) so it might not hurt [too much] to try. [edit]

Ok this is confusing.

I'm a reapplicant. Last year the secondary fee was $25, this year it's $45. However, I jsut have a little form I clip and mail in then they'll send me additional information.

Is that how they are doing it this year?

As for out-of-staters getting interviews...if you have close ties to Nebraska, then you are fine.

For example if you live in NE for 15 years you have a decent shot.

Also NE has a law that states if you graduated from a NE high school, and that if you were to matriculate into UNMC, you would pay in state tuition (doens't really have much effect on acceptance or not).

Yeah I sent in that little form too. I think it means that you will be sent a secondary application as soon as they get your payment.

If you've lived in Nebraska for fifteen years and are NOT a resident then getting an interview should be the least of your concerns. You have much bigger problems if this is the case. 😉

XCR please PM me or give us an update about the fee for reaaplicants once you find out.

Ok here's the deal.

Past two application years:
did the whole AMCAS thing
NU sends letter saying we got your application and:
-card requesting names of letter of rec writers
-a sheet about interview dates (you have to call and pick a date)
-a request for $25
(if you applied for the 2001 entering class and again for the 2002 class you didn't have to pay $25)

This year:
I get a letter that goes...

dear applicant,

blah blah blah

A $45 application/processing fee is required of all applicants. This fee is non-refundable and separate from any fees assessed by AMCAS. The rest of your secondary application material, to include information on scheduling your interview, will be sent as soon as your fee is received.

then more blah blah blah.

Just wondering if they were askign for money, and then sending secondary info this year for all applicants, or if people are receiving secondary material from UNMC like the previous two years.😕

Got a letter today asking me to pick an interview date. 🙂 I suppose I'll call Jackie tomorrow and schedule it. xcanadian, when are you gonna interview?

Well seeing how I don't have the information to call Jackie yet, I don't know. It doesn't make a difference either since the first comittee meeting is not until Dec 15th (approx.), then agian Jan 15th (approx).

Ideally I would love to interview October 17th, then attend the Texas A&M-Nebraska football game that weekend (undergrad=A&M), but not with my hellish school schedule.

Instead...
Top choice: Oct 3
Second choice: Nov 7

I haven't looked at my schedule well enough to find if another date in october would work, but I'll look into once I receive the info from UNMC.

i might also try October 10th. Like I said it all depends on what my school schedule is like and how soon I receive the interview information.

PM me or let me know when you fellow SDNers are interviewing at UNMC.

WHen are you peeps interviewing? It's gonna be November for me.

It's weird. U of Nebraska appears to have lost my AMCAS application or something.
AAMC said they transmitted it to them
But UN says they never received it.
UN told me they will call their AMCAS representative and ask for another one.

by the way when referring to the U. of Nebraska...it NU. To the med school it's UNMC.

just chalk it up to another i hate applying to med school. They'll find it.

It looks like I'll be interviewing October 31st...any one else?

I'd pick the 10th, but I am tired of making up exams from another interview, and besides, I'd rather take a free flight than pay $250 for it.

I'm definitely interviewing the 31st of Oct. I'm headed home on a free flight...thanks NWA.

XCanadianRagwee, how did your U Nebraska interview go?

XCanadianRagwee, how did your U Nebraska interview go?

It went a lot better than last year...and that's all I really wanted. In actuality it has been my top choice since it's home and every time I come home I realize jsut how much I miss it, the family, the friends, the weather, just being here in Nebraska (yes I know it sounds sad, but I really do like my home state). Granted I could have stayed in NE for undergrad instead of moving to TX or come back for grad school instead of moving to MD, but oh well.

I don't know if you are interviewing there or not (I'm goin to assume that you are), so my interview day was different than your's would be since there were only three of us interviewing (I've interviewed there the past two years as well). The interview was also different in a sense that in past years it was more of a get to know you type thing, but this year I was asked about what I saw were some future health concerns, possible vaccinations for West Nile Virus (I worked at the Health Dept this past summer, and my research for my Master's will more than likely deal with WNV). Right after the interview was the tour and then we ate in the cafeteria.

Overall it was a great day. I've interviewed at other programs, and can honestly say this would be the tops right now (I have a couple interviews left---but I know the schools fairly well and they will have to impress me a bunch to get me to change my mind with UNMC). I will not find out an accpetance, denail, or wiatlist until next January at the earliest.

If you have any specific quesitons feel free to PM me.
