I am interested in this kind of program too. With only a few spots in the whole country, I would think they are very competitive. Is this accurate? Or are most EM folks less interested in the 5 years of school. Any more info on individual experiences with researching this combined option would be great.

No it is a little less competetive. Most people in EM want to do 3 or 4 years. Also, go ahead and email people in the programs. you can find their emails online.
