Anybody who got in with C- in a pre-requisite

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received a C- in chem 2 in 1994-5 but am a non-trad and ended up retaking chem 1 and 2 in 2003-4.

Thanks so much for all of your responses. I am a non-trad and have a C- in Org Chem I from the year of 1999. Though accepted, I just became paranoid of whether I will have to retake the course before I can matriculate.

My Kaplan teacher said he got a C in Orgo 2. It was odd because he was teacing the orgo section of our class too.....

D+ one semester of physics. take that!

C in Bio 2. Oddly enough, as I volunteered information about my C to one of my interviewers, she said she thought it was good for someone to make one (and only one) C, especially early on. Said it let them know they were fallible and needed to work harder. Of course, I doubt this would hold true for the top med schools..

Not a pre-req but got a D in Electronics Lab. A totally worthless class :laugh:

You might want to call the school and double-check, as many schools require atleast a C and consider a C- to be below that and hence may require it be retaken. You may be able to negotiate something else with the school though, so you may want to contact them ASAP and find out for sure. Hope it works out for you!

LOL - I've got you all beat! I, unbelievably, failed not one but TWO prereq courses (2nd year organic chem and 3rd year biochem). The organic chem was just me being stupid and not going to class, and oh yeah, not reading the text or studying (oh, the follies of youth! *sigh*) 😉 The biochem I ended up just failing the final miserably which led to me failing the course, but was due to some very specific circumstances... but nevertheless, failed. It was definitely hard to bounce back after the nosedive my GPA took, but with time and a lot of hardwork (and some GPA boosting courses!), and a whole LOT of volunteer experience, it all worked out in the end 🙂
I *did* end up retaking both courses though (obviously), although the biochem I did after I had matriculated.

You retook biochem at another undergrad institution or at your med school?

If the school offers you admission based on your grades, including C-, and does not suggest to retake these courses, should one assume they are OK with the grades?

I retook biochem at my original undergrad school, but after I had graduated. I completed my degree, then went overseas for a semester, then came back for a semester and took a few courses to boost my GPA (I'll admit it!). I had deferred matriculating until then so I could take those courses, even though I was completed my degree. So I graduated that spring, then did the year-long required upper-level biochemistry course the following year at the same school (in a non-degree program, just so I could complete the course) and worked full-time. That was this past year year, and I'm starting med school this fall.

Well I feel a lot better reading this thread! Its a lot better than the superman type threads that are everywhere here!! 😀

one more C- in organic...

anybody else see a pattern here?

were you able to matriculate with a C- without retaking ?

Were you told to retake the classes by deferring a year by the med school or did you decide to do that on your own?

C- in Organic 2, and that on the second go through the class. It never even came up in conversation. The rest of my grades were good, however.

C in O Chem (both semesters), was never a problem.

You can probably still get in a Carribean school or maybe DO. :laugh:

Both classes were prerequisites for the med school I wanted to go to (the only one I know of which requires an entire year of upper level biochemistry... but I digress). Plus my school (not the same school) has an insane-o biochem department which considers itself the "best of the best of the best, SIR!" and is literally out to fail 2/3 of the class. Argh. But yeah. I had to complete (ie, not fail! 😀) both classes in order to apply to the school (but the organic chem I just repeated in 3rd year, not after my degree like the biochem). Again, it's not because I had a low mark, it's because the course is considered incomplete if you fail. I don't know what I would have done this year if I had failed biochem for a second time, but was offered a spot in med school! That would have been terrible... :scared:

yes, i like this thread as well!!

let's see my C's

C- --> bio1 (barely passed this one- stupid recombination and genetics calculations)
C --> orgo1 (but A orgo 3)
C --> physics2 (E and M sucks balls)
C+ --> hearing science (pfft)

Now how did I get into med school? oh right.. it's ... b/c grades don't matter since the MCAT- is the great equalizer

C- bio I ... it was a long time ago ... embarrassing, but at the time I just didn't care ...

Anyway, since then I've gotten A's in a lot of upper level bio courses, so I think that really helped.

*edit* also high mcat - i'm sure that had a lot to do with getting in

I can play, too!

C in Ochem 2 and C in biochem. Biochem was unfair. He put a bowling manual score card in the final exam and we had to fill in the blanks correctly for 50 points!!! All that because he took the class bowling once...

I got in with a C- in the 2nd semester of physics and a C in freshman intro BIOLOGY, but I think I may have offset this by getting A's in all my other prereqs.

I got a C in General Bio 2, Cell phys, and Organic 2. I was wait-listed my first application (ended up 2 people away) and then matriculated my second application. Currently a third year and just got AOA so undergrad grades mean little once your in.
