I am interested in the dual Pharm D/MBA route and was curious whether or not anyone has any current direct experience in the program. Doesn't matter what school you attend(ed), just curious about the general difficulty of the program and your own personal pros and cons.

I have 5 years of management experience with Walgreens prior to becoming an Intern, and thought the MBA might compliment my past experience. As well as possibly opening up some more doors and career paths upon graduation. Any thoughts, opinions and experiences are welcome. Thanks!

I think they are two totally different fields. I received my PharmD in 2006, worked for 2 years and went back to get my MBA.

The MBA was very general; finance, Human Resource, International studies, strategies, etc.

I have yet to find many jobs that can combine PharmD or healthcare for that matter with MBA but I think with an MBA, you can definitely make a career change much easier than with just a PharmD.

Remember, it's not the strongest that will survive but those who adapt to changes!

The MBA adds 3 letters to your signature...

Aside from this, I'm not convinced there is a benefit. A BCPS, MHA, or residency would do more for your credibility.

If you are interested in running your own pharmacy, an MBA is useful, but certainly not required.

Was there any specific reasons why you went back to get your MBA? Are you working in Industry, or in a corporate setting now or plan on in the future?

Is a MBA REQUIRED to start your own pharmacy?

I applied to MBA program with the intention of the possibility of going into hospital management or a healthcare consulting field and I also received scholarship from the school that I applied to so I went to school full time and worked part time in retail.

In the pharmaceutical industry, there are some jobs that specifically look for MBA grads but an MBA/PharmD is probably an overkill for the job. Many jobs out there that I have seen looking for MBAs have yet also to pay as much as pharmacist's salary so I have been reluctant to make a career move at this point where 10% are still unemployed.

Now I am in hospital pharmacy. During the interview, they just said that the MBA would be good to have when you get to the management level.

Feel free to ask more.

Thanks for the insight, much appreciated. If I have any other questions I'll hit you up. Thanks again.
