anyone applying to GWTN SMP 2005

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There's a very good chance that I'll be applying 👍 However, I'm not applying till Spring. My application will be on hold anyway because I'm taking the April 2005 MCAT (I might take the GRE earlier just in case).

Update: I will not be applying

I will definetely be applying. Wont be taking the MCAT till April though, and then the scores wont come in till June. That sucks!!! Hopefully there will be a slot available then.

well, they say that you can apply up until june (?) or something like that. but, i'd caution you to apply as soon as you can. i think the classes have been filling up sooner and sooner every year for smp. waiting for april scores in june might be too late. you should e-mail the program and see what they suggest you guys do. i'm pretty sure the gre is an option as well. best of luck with the mcat and your smp application. it's a really great program and i'm learning a ton.

is this that georgetown year off masters thing? can someone provide more info on it or give me a link?

I heard a lot of people do this or the NIH IRTA program.

Good stuff or bad stuff? i feel like i'm just trying to do what med schools want

*waves*

I'm applying--going to send in my application in late January/early February. It opens Jan. 31, right? My college has a winterterm and so my recs won't arrive until after then, sadly. I'm retaking the MCAT in April, so we'll see what they think of my previous score...

This summer when I was waiting for my MCAT results I read the SMP 2004 threads. They were still accepting as late as July so you still have a shot with April MCATs.

If anyone has any admissions statistics I'd love to hear them. The only thing I've been able to find are the stats for the 2002 class: 3.3 GPA, 27 MCAT. Still looking for even a guestimated acceptance rate.

I'm also applying to the Georgetown SMP program...I'm going thru the MD application process now and not keeping my hopes up. For those of you who are applying...are you going to go ahead and apply to med school (again?) during your time at G-Town or are you going to wait and apply later? Also, does anyone know of any similar programs in Ohio? How are people planning on paying for the program??? And yes any current stats would be greatly appreciated!!!

the stats for this year's class are:

~29 MCAT, ~3.3 GPA (science probably a little lower)

Most people in the program are applying to medical schools concurrently. The directors of the program strongly advise everyone to apply the same year.

If you guys have any questions, you can PM me.

Here's a link for the program website:

Best of luck.

If I do the G-town SMP, I will be applying to medical schools while enrolled in the program. I've never applied to medical school so it would be my first time.

Regarding the Ohio question, I don't think there are any real SMP-type programs. However, the Georgetown SMP awards an MS in Physiology and Biophysics and Case Western has a 2-year MS in Physiology or 2-year MS in Exercise Physiology through the Physiology and Biophysics department there. The one advantage of the CWRU physiology programs is that they're tuition-free. But given the choice, I would do the G-Town over a program like Case's. Case's isn't made with the specific goal of getting students into med school.

Phil

Update: Case's program is no longer receptive to preprofessionals

I'm in the same boat as anyone...and would also like to pose a question:

I currently have a 3.01 GPA double majoring in Biochemistry and Microbiology at the Univ. of FL and will be grad. in December. I will be applying to SMP for FALL2005. However, I am currently struggling with my last couple of classes allowing my GPA to potentially drop to a 2.9. If I hypothetically get a 33 or greater on the MCAT, do you think I still have a shot at SMP considering my ex. curr. and letters of rec are strong?. Have any of you ever heard of ANYONE getting in to SMP with <3.0 GPA? Afterall, the avg. is a 3.3. Thanks

I got this email from Georgetown in mid-August:
Thank you for your interest in Georgetown University's Special Master's Program. We...suggest you apply early starting January 1, 2005 for best consideration. We make decisions on a rolling basis, so it is best to apply earlier rather then later.

This year we received 700 applications for just over 135 seats. This is an ideal program for those student's wishing to strengthen and enhance their academic profiles. We are selective, so please be sure to apply early. If your recent MCAT scores are not close to a 27, you will need to consider when you are best prepared to re-take the MCAT in order to have stronger scores. You will be required to have all your pre-med courses (B,C,P, M) completed prior to beginning our Master's program. You will earn a Master of Science in Physiology degree from Georgetown University upon completion of this program.

We are very proud of the fact that our program is nationally renown for it's academic rigor and excellence in preparing students like yourself for matriculating successfully into medical schools across the nation.

Because our program is a graduate program, applicants will need to have a minimum GPA science and cumulative of 3.0 and better with a MCAT score of 27 plus.Last year we received over 600 applications and accepted 135 students. We will take into consideration all aspects of your application including your grades, letters of recommendation, co-curricular activities and work experience. This will include looking at all your official transcripts and noting upward academic trends. Please be sure to consult with your Pre-Health Advisor, who is familiar with our program and can help you with your letters of recommendation. We stongly reccomend that you have 3-5 letters of recommendations 2 from the sciences; the others from a non-science, clinical and research experience. It's important to maintain contact with your letter writers as your letters will need to be current when you go to apply to medical schools. More information may be found at http://www.naahp.org

Our program differs from the traditional "Postbac" in that you are literally taking 6 of your 10 Master degree courses with 1st year medical school students at Georgetown University School of Medicine. If you are able to compete academically with them, your credentials in this program will undoubtedly enhance your application to medical schools across the country. The majority of our students have completed their AMCAS application prior to starting our program in August and apply to medical schools simultaneously while they are completing their Masters degree. You may view our recently updated website and see where our most recent graduates have gone onto attend US medical schools across the nation...
So apparently they're trying to push for minimum cumulative and science gpas. However, I don't know if the above comments are completely accurate. For example, it states that you need a 27+ MCAT. However, the website states "Applicants usually have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and total MCAT scores of at least 27" and that "you may submit GRE scores instead." So I don't know if they've got a new policy or what. You might want to call. But you said you're graduating in December--even if you do graduate just short of 3.0, you'd have time in the spring term to get it to a 3.0.

Phil

Update: there are exceptions to this 3.0/3.0/27 guideline 😳

hello all,

i wasn't sure where to post this question, but i didn't really want to start a whole new thread, so i hope this place is ok!

i had just recently turned in all my materials to the gtown smp, and they notified me back telling me that my file was complete. but now, just today, i received an email from Ms. Moses telling me to send in my spring 2005 grades...which won't be in until june at the earliest!

do you think that means i won't find out until june? 😕 i was really hoping to find out sometime sooner just so i can figure out my plans after graduation in may... :scared: it's really hard when people ask "what are you doing after graduation?" and i have to answer "i have no idea."

hmm..anyway, any advice would be helpful. 🙂 should i just go ahead and find a job?? im just afraid of committing to something and then telling them i can't do it...

thanks!! 😉

I applied in early January, and just got a notification today that I was accepted w/o spring grades. Maybe you should try calling up and seeing what the hold up is yourself? They have always been super nice to me. Good luck!

For the SMP'04 class it was also GPA 3.3 MCAT 29 Good luck ya'lls

Kitty,

Papa is right. I would call Gina right away and find out what your status is, and how waiting for your grades will effect your application. Gina is wonderful - very helpful. Most likely, she will be very happy to explain where you stand.

Hope to see ya next year. 🙂
