Anyone applying to Peds/Genetics?

Hi I am applying to peds and peds/genetics... But this latter one is my real dream...
Is someone of u guys here applying too??? If so, did u hear anything from the programs??? I applied basically all over the country but I've heard nothing so far and still some programs like Sinai NYC have to download my app
Another question: is Peds/Genetics at the same level of Peds categorical speaking of competitiveness, or what else???
I'd really appreciate any asnwers, as it is really hard to find any fresh info about this program.

Hey moonyla83, yes, me too! I'm sure I'll see you around the interview trail. Do you have a peds genetics advisor at your institution? From what I've been told, the competitive factor is program dependent - some it's more, some it's less. I think it might be more fair to describe it as just different (again, program dependent). Many are just looking for something different - for some it's more research, or other things, that the categorical program might care less about. Good luck!

I would speculate that it is either the same or less competitive, barring some places which are going to be more competitive based on prestige (e.g. Boston, CHOP, etc), but even at these places, if you are competitive for their peds residency, you'd probably be looked at favorably for their fellowship. Genetics is one of those classic examples of a field from which people shy away becuase you will spend extra time getting paid like a resident to come out and quite possibly make less than a general pediatrician would make and have less flexibility with practice locations (you will be tied to academic centers). This makes it a non-competitive field in most places.

@Acadia: unfortunately I have no advisor at all at my "old" insitution, since I am an EU IMG who just graduated in late july... Anyway, I have been working in Peds gen for the last two years and made three away rotations in the US, two of them being at Sinai NYC (my Peds SubI and the peds gen elective)
Two of my LORs are from Sinai, so I really hope at least to be considered by that program... But they still haven't downloaded my app, like at least half of the Peds/Gen programs (I applied to 11)...
What about you??? Did all the progs download your app??? Did u get any iv???

Why would you make less doing peds/genetics than just peds? Is it just because the number of patients is fewer? Couldn't you see ped patients and ped genetic patients simultaneously?

Because you spend a long time with patients and families and do very few billable procedures. Can you do both together? Probably, but most likely in a model of doing part-time in one and part to near full time in the other, not seeing alternating genetics & gen peds patients in the same day.

Right, yeah I meant like seeing gen peds patients three days a week and genetics patients twice a week, something like that.

I applied to 4 combined peds/genetics programs and a bunch of peds categorical. (I am couples matching and have some city limitations.).

I got an interview at one, one I have heard nothing from, and at a third I got an interview from the peds program but haven't heard anything from the combined. At the last I recently got a wait list email - unsure if it is for just the categorical or both it and the combined ....so, we'll see.

It seems like this combined process has been really different than my experience with the categorical programs. I'd love to hear what others are seeing and experiencing!

Would definitely suggest contacting the genetics to let them know you've scheduled a categorical, should they be interested in scheduling with them too. That sped and eased the scheduled for several places for me. The two sides don't always communicate regularly.

Monday will be my first Peds-Genetics inteview !
Has somebody interviewed for these yet?, if so, what kind on Q's the genetics departments ask???
