Anyone applying to SUNY Downstate?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It doesn't, but thanks jlr5585🙂 The reason I need the specific date is because I am considering dropping my winter psy course. The tests for both classes overlap and on top of that there is a AP2 lab quiz every Thursday morning. Unfortunately, I am in psy class the night before until 9:30. I don't want to drop, but realistically I might be spreading myself too thin.

If I pick it up in the spring, the class would end June 1, which might conflict with SD, if I were to get in.

I hear you, if you want to find out the actual start date give them a call and ask them 🙂 I'm sure they will gladly tell you, I had a similar issue last year when I applied and I had to call Stony Brook. Hope everything works out!!

I asked at the info session a while back and they said the first Monday in June.

I would contact them about this specific question. My school's graduation was in the beginning of June last year and I believe Downstate started their program on June 1st. I was worried that I might start the program before I actually graduate, so I asked them. They told me that if I get a letter from the registrar stating that I have met all of my degree requirements, I'd be allowed to start the OT program.

So, I'd contact Downstate about your class conflict.

You guys... Click on that link in the e-mail you got when your application was received, where you checklist is.. and tell me if it changed for you... Do you have a bunch of other stuff there that says "Accepted/Alternate List Applicant Checklist" ???? I wonder if this is something all applicants got or if it means good things!! I don't want to get myself excited if means nothing, but one of the items on this checklist says "Acceptance Response Form" so I can't help but wonder....

Ahhhhh!! Me too! I'm in I'm in! Congratulations to the both of us!!! 🙂 I'm sending in my deposit tomorrow!!! lol

Congrats to the both of you! Unfortunately, my checklist has not been updated. They're still awaiting my Fall 2010 grades, my spring 2011 schedule of classes and my statistics grade. They're also waiting for my BA verification and official final transcript, but those won't be available until June since I'm still working on my undergrad. I sent out the first 3 documents more than 2 weeks ago, so they should've gotten it. I'll have to call them on Monday.

I got my acceptance letter today!! But my online checklist hasn't been updated yet 😕

This was my second time applying to SUNY Downstate's Occupational Therapy program. I really thought I was going to get it. I read the above posts and that is why I am curious I was not accepted. Please let me know what I may need to improve on since a few of you were accepted. Below is my qualifications:
-GPA: 3.3 (BA PSYCH)
-Prereq GPA: 3.6
-Volunteer hours: about 500 (school, nursing home, rehab, and therapeutic horseback riding) additionally I completed a 200 hour internship with a chemical dependency clinic
-I also work at a Physical and Occupational Therapist as an aide.
-Had 2 recommendation letters (OT + Doctor whom I did research with)
-Wrote great personal statement, think my interview went pretty well, and writing sample was average-good. (I was very nervous on my interview bc Downstate was my absolute school of choice)
-I had no outstanding prerequisites
-CPR certified and teacher assistant certified.

Please let me know why you think I was not accepted. Since I have been denied, I am applying to TOURO and still waiting to hear back from ITHACA and HUSSON. (I was accepted to Dyouville, and rejected from Pittsburgh)

Why don't you just call and ask them?

That is so odd, but I'm starting to think it's really just a matter of luck at this point as I read on here about different people with great numbers and experience getting denied. Everything about you seriously screams great candidate so I would definitely call and ask. Maybe even e-mail? I feel like they might say that they had so many qualified applicants and that whole thing but I mean you didn't even get wait listed.. that's crazy. I don't see how you could improve (besides bring the cum. gpa up but I think that's even a shot in the dark to whether it would make a difference). I truly hope you get into the other schools you apply to

Maybe it has something to do with who you interviewed with? Your stats and experiences are phenomenal. I would call or email them. When and who interviewed you?

I interviewed with Joyce Sabari in December. I also emailed her and she pretty much said that although my credentials were impressive, there were others that beat it ...
I got accepted to Ithaca and have an interview with Touro in a week 🙂

Congrats on the Ithaca acceptance. While I feel they are looking for certain things, I also think it comes down to the luck of the draw. I've heard the person you interviewed with is a tough professor, I wonder if that holds true as far as interviewing goes.

thanks a lot! yeah and I think its also "who you know" if you know what I mean. Good luck with the OT program, you will do great! 🙂

Abo- I am shocked you did not get into Downstate! I have read about others who have gotten in with not near as good as your stats! This makes me nervous...I am applying for next year. My GPA is around a 3.4 and my pre-req GPA is also a 3.4. I have 50 hours but I am going to keep going until the application time.

Hi,

I wanted to congratulate those who were accepted into OT programs! 🙂 I also have a question...I am planning on applying to Downstate for next year (Summer 2012), however, I will still have the following pre-reqs in progress by the deadline in November (i.e. A&P I and General Bio). I currently have a 4.0 gpa in the prereq courses and a 3.9 overall gpa. Since I will also have to complete A&P II in the Spring semester, is it recommended that I hold off on applying for next year? or should I just apply?

I'm trying to decide if it's best to wait another application cycle or just apply.

Thanks,
Madusa 😕

Your stats are really similar to mine and btw, AMAZING! 🙂 Anyway, I'd say go for it, take a chance, and apply for the summer of 2012. I look at it two ways: By the time you apply in November of 2011, your AP1 and General Bio class will be almost finished. When you apply I would send them an unofficial transcript showing that these courses are in progress. They might consider you as you will have fulfilled all of your pre-req's by the time the program begins in June 2012. On the other hand, they might view AP1 and AP2 as critical to the admission decision in calculating your pre-req GPA, so that might be a factor that I'm unsure about. I would just go for it, because you never know what could happen. I was accepted to Downstate for this year's class (I'm going to a diff program) and when I applied I had Chemistry and AP2 in progress. At the interview they asked me what I was expecting to receive in these courses. I told them and the interviewer took note of it and informed me that I would have to send an official transcript when the courses were completed. Hope this helps! Any other questions, just yell 🙂 Good luck!

Hi jlr,

Thanks so much for responding to my post...and congrats on your acceptances! 🙂 I will take my chances and apply for next summer. I had another question...I read that there is a 250 word personal essay, however, I've read some posts that mention another required essay...how many essays are required for admissions not including the on-site writing sample?

You'd be correct...there are 3 total essays that you will have completed by the time you are at the interview portion of applying. The first is the regular essay, the second is a 250 word personal statement, and the 3rd is the one you will do at the interview (it wasn't very hard - they just want to see what you know/how you write under time constraints). I actually went to the writing center at my undergrad for help revising the first two because I felt that the two essay questions were very similar and I wanted to make sure I was doing them properly. The personal statement was challenging because you need to write a lot with only a limited amount of words. Anyway, let me know if anything else comes up and I'll try to help!! 🙂

I agree with everything JLR said- I would say definitely apply. I had 3 outstanding prereqs when I applied and all went well... My GPAs were pretty much identical to yours as well. As JLR said, the 250 word essay is a little tedious because you need to play around with the wording to make it concise. My advice is be as creative as you can be... brainstorm a bunch of ideas and then narrow them down.

Thanks so much, Laurp0233. I will definitely apply as you and JLR suggested. I'm just a bit nervous about writing 2 essays. I previously wrote a 2 page personal statement for NYU and was accepted, but was unable to attend due to the expensive tuition and costs.

Quick question...how long is the other essay? Is the essay question similar?

Thanks again,

Madusa
