I am just wondering if anyone around a 3.0, more specifically 2.9-3.2 got an acceptance this application session (for 2008 matriculation)?

If you could throw in your DAT scores in addition to your GPA, it would be very helpful and what schools you were given an interview to and which schools you were given accepted to.

I have a 3.14 cumulative and 3.08 science GPA. No masters or grad classes, just undergrad. This was my first time applying.

DAT scores were:

Bio: 24
GC: 22
OC: 20
PAT: 24
RC: 22
QR: 18
AA: 21
TS: 22

Interviewed at:
Tufts, VCU, Creighton, Temple, Midwestern

Offered interview, but declined at:
BU and NYU

Accepted to:
VCU, Creighton, Temple

Waitlisted:
Midwestern

Denied:
Tufts

Attending:
Haven't decided for sure

I have a ton of ECs and leadership, but only ~50 hours shadowing a dentist.
I think my DAT scores definately got me and not my GPA. I could have done been in undergrad if I tried harder, but I want to have a life and fun too.

Thank you for your reply Melon, exactly what I was hoping for. ummjoey I know about predents.com but its possible to overlook those individuals in this range of gpa I am hoping forward to see got accepted and searching through all the schools isn't exactly helpful on time. Also many are not represented on predents.com and was hoping to hear from them. The more the merrier.

i'm wondering about acceptances in these ranges too

3.1/3.1 GPA/SGPA. 18/18 DAT. 200+ Shadow hours. Lots of volunteer hours. 2 years research. No masters/postbac...just undergrad.

Interviews: Buffalo, NYU, Howard, Louisville, UNLV, Case, Tufts
Acceptances: NYU, UNLV
Waitlist: Buffalo, Louisville

Keep the faith. You'll get in!

congrats to everyone who has made it... I'm trying to add my name to this list. If not, my back up plan is to go to a masters program..

anyone wanna join me? 😉

Bizznet I might hit you up on that if I don't get in anywhere, but I hope to add myself to this list also. I'm sure we can make it though

hey congrats!! may i ask what you got on your RC and PAT?
this is becaues case and buffalo rejected me without even giving me an interview and I'm wondering why =(. i have shadowing, volunteer, and research hours too. but i submitted my app. in oct. im also trying to see whether this is the reason they rejected me, or b/c of my 17/18 on RC and PAT

thx stdmufin!

EDIT: nevermind! i found you on predents =P. no wonder. ur RC score was high!! nice. mebbe that's why case and buffalo rejected me =( since ur app was also sent in pretty late

Are you a california resident? Also what about your personal statement? Maybe you got exceptionally strong recommendations? 😕

i am a CA resident (SF actually). went to a UC (don't know if this matters). i got letters from 2 dentists, 4 phd's. all of which knew me well. i hope my stats give some of you hope.

Going to a UC and being a California resident helps. I think they are less strict on residents from the greatest state than others. I wish I could tell them I'd much rather livin in California than Nevada and I'll be moving back soon. Maybe if I tell them I'm moving back after doing my college in Nevada if they would consider me a resident.

Maybe UCSF should require you to name the bridges and calculate the bridge tolls each week as part of the interview.

congrats on your acceptance to an awesome school! tekstyle, if you don't mind, can you tell us your major and whether you had any interview invites from other schools? Thanks!

i was a biological science major with medical microbiology emphasis. keep in mind that I did not take the bare minimum to graduate. I took immunology, virology, physio, anatomy, food science, med micro, micro, genetics, evolution, bioenergetics, cell bio, plant development, yeast genetics, human evolution, biochem, paleobio . most of which were upper division and required for my emphasis on top of the general BCP for a biological science BS major at my institution.

ucsf was my one and only :-D

It is possible. I graduated from UVA in 2005 and have been taking upper level bios since. I was a full time dental assistant (~2000 hours) which i think is what helped. I worked for several different doctors in a large practice. No EC's except my sorority. This was my second time applying.

GOOD LUCK! I am starting to believe anything is possible!!!

DentalGal,

Where did you go for your Post-bacc and what was the program you were in?

THANKS

What's d.5 program?

The D.5 program was initiated about 17 years ago for students who had made an application to dental school, but were not successful in gaining admission. Some of these applicants showed great potential towards being a dentist. However, certain factors, such as lower GPA, weaker DAT scores, many years without taking college courses, and other factors, negated them from being a viable candidate. This program was created to have these applicants take certain selected science courses with the freshman dental class. The purpose was to have them prove their ability to succeed in professional school courses. Four science courses, Mammalian Physiology, Evidence-Based Dentistry, Microscopic Anatomy and Infection and Immunology were selected. The strict requirement for success is a mandatory minimum of "B" in each course. If this is achieved, then the prospective student would have a greater potential of being accepted into the following year's freshman class and they would also be exempt from these four courses. However, if a grade of lower than “B” was achieved in any of these courses, then they would not be considered for entrance into the new freshman class. The students selected for the D.5 program usually have strong science backgrounds, excellent interpersonal skills, and dental experiences.

Hi, may I ask how many school you have applied?

I applied to 15 schools as well. I submitted around August 15th (not sure on the exact date anymore)

just had an interview at boston so i'll let you know if i get in or not.

Go to PreDents.com and do a search for that criteria 🙂

It's possible, it takes perseverance though! I was just accepted to the UW today, from the alternate list😀.
My stats:
Sci GPA : 2.76
Non-sci : 3.06
CumGPA: 2.81

BIO -19, CHEM-19, OCHEM-21, PAT-19, QR-16, RC-23. AA-20.

This was my 3rd time applying. 10 schools, 2 interviews, 2 alternate lists.
The difference for me was going back to school and taking some more classes to boost my GPA, and volunteering in a dental clinic. Hope this helps and inspires!
👍

Could you share with us how many courses you took during this three years duration?
Thank you!

Thank you!

I have been taking 2 - 3 classes per semester since I graduated UVA. And I took A & P in summer school last summer. I have taken Immuno, Cell, Genetics, Micro, Biochem, A & P, Dev Bio, and Physics and some other classes.

Everyone just needs to stay positive and don't lose hope!

My 2nd time applying is when I retook the DAT to get better scores. When that didn't work I started dental assisting in a clinic and took 12 credits of upper-division bio (physio, cell bio, lab, etc) and got a 3.6, wanted to show them I was motivated and could handle the coursework. Good luck!😎

12 credits equal to 12 courses (for entire year?)?

how many year have you done for post-grad?

pretty much 3 years. i took one semester away from school and worked full time.

Where did you do your post-bac program? I have a 2.76 overall GPA and a 2.73 Science GPA and am retaking Human Anatomy and Biochem right now, which if I get an A in both, will raise my GPA to 3.0. I'm hoping this is good enough for UB Dental admissions but not sure. I've met with them twice but still feel like I'm not sure what my strategy should be for raising my GPA. Advice from anyone is welcome also.

When you were first studying for the DAT, did you feel like you already knew a majority of the info? How long did you study for the DAT? Great scores!! 😀
