i had gone back and forth between MD and MD/PhD for years (i've been in research for ~4 years, a few papers, poster presentation at national conference) and then finally decided to just apply as MD. i'll be starting at Cornell in a month and now that i'm coming to grips with leaving research, i'm not sure if i made the right decision. does anyone know if its possible to transfer into MSTP from the MD program? and if so, how to go about that? i know at some schools you need to wait for someone to transfer out of the program, but i heard from someone else that maybe that isn't the case at Cornell. any info would be much appreciated. thanks.

I have asked about the opposite - PhD to MD/PhD and they told me they don't allow that anymore. However, it might be possible to do what you want. I'd suggest you make an appointment with Dr. Olaf Sparre Andersen - he's the director of the MD/PhD program. He is extremely sincere and very helpful. I've talked to him before, and he had great advice to offer.

Let me know if you need more details on how to reach him, etc....

Good Luck :luck: 🙂

With your background, it should not be that difficult. I know a couple of people who did exactly as you suggested (transferred after year 1 of the MD program) since they had taken the MCAT and that's sufficient for most MD/PhD programs.

I was on the advisory commitee for the md/phd program at cornell as they were rethinking their transfer policy this past year. It isn't trivial to transfer, and they have been taking one person a year on average. Usually people join after their first 2 years, and some after they have completed a year of research (through HHMI or something). It has been case-specific in the past, and you need to speak to Dr. Andersen as soon as you think you are interested in the program. He may recommend you take the MD/PhD course that is required for 1st and 2nd year md/phds (it is open to all the medical students). If you have any other questions, feel free to ask, or email the program administrator.

thanks everybody for your help. i'll make an appointment with Dr. Andersen. i'm relieved to know that it is at least possible. 🙂
