i asked my boss (PI for a research lab) for a recommendation and he said i should put something together over the weekend that would guide him about what medical schools are looking for....

how do you write your own recommendation letter?
"i'm so sweet..."?

I was intrigued when I saw the title of this post, because I actually had to do this several years ago (internship boss too busy, and specifically told me to ghostwrite the rec). Naturally, I gave myself glowing praise! 😀 My boss agreed with everything that was written, and signed it. For help, I just googled some web sites that guided letter writers through the process.

That being said, it doesn't sound like your PI wants you to actually write the letter. "Putting something together" sounds like giving him a portfolio of your work, e.g. a resume, a transcript, maybe a list of what schools say make a good doc and how you have those qualities, etc.
